CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Despite a career day in the circle from freshman Estelle Czech, the NC State softball team dropped a pitchers duel, 2-0, Sunday against Virginia. The Wolfpack will conclude its series against the Cavaliers tomorrow, March 22, at 2 p.m. on ACCNX.
Czech tossed the first complete game of her young career, going the distance in 6.0 innings where she allowed no earned runs (two unearned) with two hits. Czech (0-1) struck out three, while not allowing a walk. She was extremely efficient, throwing just 64 pitches through her six innings and retired 12-straight at one point.
Molly Grube earned the win in the circle for Virginia, pitching 5.1 shutout innings, while Mikayla Hogue earned the save.
The only runs of the came across in the bottom of the first, off a pair of NC State miscues. Virginia's lead off batter reached on a dropped pop fly. Emma McBride laid down a sac bunt, reaching safely on a second NC State error that also allowed the lead off to reach third. A double steal plated the first run before a two-out single brought across the second.
NC State came back with a scoring opportunity in the second inning, drawing back-to-back walks to open the frame. A sac bunt moved the base runners to second and third, but NC State would have two-straight groundouts to end the frame.
The Wolfpack put another runner in scoring position in the sixth inning when Sam Sack had a one-out double that went into deep left center.
