Softball Faces First Road Test of 2021

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – For the first time in 2021, the NC State softball team is set for a road test. The Wolfpack is set to take on Virginia in a four-game series, Saturday, March 20-22. It will be the first ACC road game for NC State in 699 days.
The adjusted weekend schedule opens Saturday, March 20 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The two teams will then meet Sunday, March 21 at 1 p.m. followed by the series finale Monday at 2 p.m. All four games will be available on ACCNX.
LAST TIME OUT
NC State had a four-game series against #15 Virginia Tech. The Hokies won the series, 3-1, with NC State winning a shutout, five-inning game on Saturday. The 8-0 win marked the 10th all-time shutout against a ranked opponent and the first for NC State since 2015. The win was tied for the largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent in program history.
Logan Morris led the Wolfpack with five hits and a .625 batting average that included five runs scored. She had hits in all three games she had at bats in, drawing three walks in the third game of the weekend. Morris' notched two home runs and a double for a 1.500 slugging percentage and .727 on-base percentage. Both of her home runs came on Keely Rochard, Virginia Tech's ace, who had only given up one home run in the 2021 season prior to the series against the Wolfpack. Randi Farricker also had a stellar weekend at the plate, with two home runs that moved her to a team-best seven on the season. Of her 14 hits this season, 13 have been for extra bases.
#HOMERUNMINDSET
Entering the week, NC State led the ACC and ranked 10th nationally in home runs per game with 1.72 per game. The Wolfpack has led the ACC and been in the top-15 every week since opening its 2021 schedule. NC State also leads the ACC in on-base percentage and slugging percentage, both of which are top-25 nationally.
The Pack has hit 31 home runs through 18 games this season and is eight shy of breaking into the top-10 single-season marks at NC State.
A LOOK AT VIRGINIA
Despite holding a 6-13 and 2-11 ACC record, Virginia is coming off a four-game series at Duke where they forced a nine-inning game and lost the first three games by a combined seven runs. Both of Virginia's conference wins this season came against Pitt in early February.
The Cavaliers are led by Katie Goldberg who was a team-best .353 batting average with five doubles and three home runs. Donna Friedman ranks second in the ACC in doubles with seven on the season.
Virginia has used six pitchers throughout the season, with three who have pitched 20 or more innings. Mikayla Hogue has the most innings with 36.2 and a 2-4 record. As a team, the Cavaliers have a 4.23ERA and .247 batting average.
