
Records Fall on First Day of Indoor Track & Field Season

RALEIGH - The NC State track & field programs saw strong starts to their 2021-22 indoor seasons on Saturday, competing at a pair of meets and setting multiple school records and personal bests.
WINSTON-SALEM COLLEGE KICK-OFF
Action began with Mikieja Covington posting the sixth-quickest time in the women's 60m hurdles prelims. The redshirt senior ran a 8.87 to take first in her heat and automatically qualify to the event final.
In the final, Covington recorded a time of 8.68 to finish fifth.
Mahkayla Hart made her career debut for the Wolfpack, posting a 13.06m (42'10.25") throw in the women's shot put that checked into the NC State record book as the ninth-best mark in program history.
Competing in the women's shot put as well was Timara Chapman, who recorded a career-best 12.31m (40'4.75") mark. Covington rounded out the group of shot put competitors, throwing 11.41m (37'5.25").
All three NC State competitors competing in the women's weight throw finished in the top 10. Kayla Beasley was the top Wolfpack finisher, placing fifth with a throw of 16.20m (53'1.75") while Hart (15.10m, 49'6.5") and Makala Wright (14.83m, 48'8") finished in eighth and ninth, respectively.
SHARON COLYEAR-DANVILLE SEASON OPENER
The first race at Boston University saw Katelyn Tuohy take down not only the school record in the women's 3000m but additionally the American Junior and ACC records. The sophomore ran an 8:54.18 (fourth place) to improve the NC State record by just over six seconds and the American Junior record by over four seconds.
Sam Bush recorded a time beneath the previous 3000m school record as well, taking fifth place with an 8:54.37.
Sarah LaTour and Anna Vess laced up for NC State in the 3000m, both running PRs. LaTour clocked a 9:12.42 for eighth place while Vess tabbed a 9:34.05 for 14th.
The second school record of the day fell in the women's 5000m when Kelsey Chmiel registered a 15:27.36. Her time was over 16 seconds faster than the previous Wolfpack record and was good for fourth place.
Allie Hays turned in a seventh-place time in the 5000m, going 10 seconds quicker than the prior program record with her personal-best mark of 15:33.84.
Savannah Shaw and Heather Holt made their career debuts in the event, posting a 16:06.16 and a 16:20.91, respectively. Gionna Quarzo suited up for the 5000m as well, recording a 16:36.23.
JP Flavin made the trip to Boston to compete in the men's 5000m. Running a 13:47.67, he improved his personal best by almost 30 seconds and recorded the third-best time in NC State history.
