
Pack Splits Doubleheader With Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The NC State softball team played a doubleheader with Gardner-Webb on Wednesday at Brinkley Stadium, and split its pair of games with the Runnin' Bulldogs. The Wolfpack dropped a 6-5 decision in game one and run-ruled GWU in the nightcap 10-0.
The Pack improves to 13-8 while the Bulldogs move to 14-10 on the season. The victory marked the team's fifth run-rule win and sixth shutout of the year.
How It Happened
Game One
-In the second inning the Pack took a 2-0 advantage. Chandley Garner led off with a home run to right center, and Lily Bishop scored on Haley Finn's sacrifice fly to left field after getting on base with a double to right field and advancing to third on a wild pitch.
-Gardner-Webb knotted the game in the third inning. A bases-loaded walk brought the first run across and a wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed the other run to score.
-The Bulldogs took a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning on a pair of RBI outfield singles. The first two batters of the side were walked, and Kaylee Wacaster's single to left field brought the runner at second home. After a 6-2 fielder's choice put runners on first and second, Lauren Huffman's single through the right side scored the other run.
-In the seventh the Pack rallied to take a 5-4 lead, as Cheyenne Balzer's 2-RBI triple to left field and Garner's sacrifice fly to right field plated the three runs.
-In the bottom half of the frame though a double followed by an outfield single knotted the game at five, and a walk-off sacrifice fly to center field ended the game.
Game Two
-NC State quickly took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Caraway scored on Shurbutt's infield single after she led off with a single to right field, stole second and advanced to third on Angie Rizzi's sacrifice bunt.
-In the third inning the Pack scored five runs on four hits and an error, extending its lead to six. Balzer and Kobziak hit back-to-back RBI outfield singles to plate the first two runs, and after a fielder's choice put runners on the corners Bishop's bases-clearing double tacked on two more. After Bishop advanced to third on an error she scored on Macauley Prickett's groundout to second base.
-In the sixth NC State scored four runs on three hits to extend its lead to 10. Balzer's RBI groundout and Kobziak's sacrifice fly to center field plated the first two runs, while Garner's two-run blast to center field brought in the other two runs.

-Bishop, Caraway and Rizzi each hit a double. For Bishop and Rizzi it was their first of the season while Caraway tallied her fourth.
-Garner led the team at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance.
-Brittany Nimmo took the loss in the circle, moving to 1-1 on the season. She relieved Devin Wallace in the fifth inning and they gave up a combined six hits.
Game Two
-Balzer, Rizzi and Shurbutt tallied two hits apiece, while Caraway, Rizzi, Shurbutt and Garner scored two runs apiece.
-Bishop tallied her second double of the season while Garner's two-run shot was her fourth of the season.
-Harli Hubbard threw the first complete game shutout of her career, picking up her first win of the season. She gave up four hits and struck out a career-high six batters.
-In the fourth inning Shurbutt caught a line drive and turned the double play to Balzer at first, marking the team's sixth double play of the season.

NC State will host Notre Dame this weekend in a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday and play the finale Sunday at 12 p.m. at Dail Stadium. All three games will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
