Softball Splits Doubleheader With Notre Dame

RALEIGH – The NC State softball team opened its conference series with Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at Dail Stadium as the teams played a doubleheader and split the games. Despite dropping the first game 15-0 (5), the Wolfpack bounced back in the second game and earned a 4-1 victory, limiting the Fighting Irish to just two hits while evening the series.
The Pack improves to 14-9 (2-3 ACC) while the Irish move to 13-8 (1-1 ACC) on the season.
How It Happened
Game One
-Notre Dame took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Katie Marino's three-run homer to right field after an infield single and error put a pair of runners on.
-In the second inning the Irish scored six runs on seven hits and one error. A pair of RBI singles, 2-RBI double and two-run home run plated the six runs.
-The Irish extended their lead to 13 in the third inning, scoring four runs on has many hits and an error. An RBI single and error brought in the first two runs and a 2-RBI double to right center allowed the other two runs in the frame to cross home plate.
-In the fifth inning a solo shot to center field and RBI double down the left field line tacked on the other two runs.
-Harli Hubbard took the loss in the circle, pitching 1.2 innings to move to 1-1 on the season.
Game Two
-Alyssa Compton gave the Pack its first run of the game in the second inning. She led off the frame with a double to right field, advanced to third on a groundout to second base and scored on Haylee Kobziak's sacrifice fly to center field.
-Notre Dame knotted the game in the next half inning when Alexis Bazos scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a hit-by-pitch and moving into scoring position on a groundout and infield single.
-In the fifth three runs on two hits and an error gave the Pack a 4-1 advantage. Kobziak scored on the error after leading off with a single up the middle and advancing on a sacrifice bunt and groundout. Cheyenne Balzer and Compton drew bases loaded walks to bring the other two runs across home plate.
-NC State managed to seal the win with only allowing a combined three Notre Dame batters to reach base in the final two innings.
-Devin Wallace (8-4) earned the win in the circle as she threw her fifth complete game of the season, only allowing two hits in the contest.
-Timberlyn Shurbutt tallied seven assists in the game, the second-most in program history in a single game.
-Shurbutt and Compton each hit a double, giving the team 29 on the season.
