RALEIGH – Despite a surge in the sixth inning to knot the game, the NC State softball team dropped its rubber match 7-5 with Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon at Dail Stadium.
The Panthers clinched the series, improving to 10-6-1 (2-1 ACC) on the season while the Wolfpack moves to 12-7 (1-2 ACC).
How It Happened
-After three scoreless innings a 2-RBI single in the fourth inning gave the Panthers a 2-0 advantage. A one-out single and hit-by-pitch put a pair of runners on base, and a passed ball moved them into scoring position. After a swinging strikeout, Connor McGaffic's single up the middle scored the runners.
-Pitt added two more runs in the fifth inning, increasing its lead to 4-0. Leadoff batter Alexis Solak was walked, and after a groundout and strikeout Taylor Myers hit a two-run blast to center field.
-NC State knotted the game in the sixth inning with four runs on three hits. A pair of walks and fielder's choice loaded the bases, and RBI singles by Alyssa Compton and Chandley Garner brought in the first two runs. With the bases still loaded Lily Bishop was hit-by-pitch to cut the deficit to one, and after a swinging strikeout pinch hitter Haley Finn singled through the right side to tie the game.
-In the top of the seventh Pitt took a 7-5 advantage. A leadoff single and pair of walks loaded the bases, and a hit-by-pitch, infield single and sacrifice fly tacked on three more runs.
-In the bottom frame the Pack tried to rally as Timberlyn Shurbutt led off with a home run to center field, but the next three batters grounded out to end the game.
Inside The Box Score
-Alyssa Compton and Macauley Prickett each hit a leadoff double in the game as Compton led the team at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance.
-Shurbutt's home run marked her fifth of the season and third consecutive game that she's hit a long ball.
-Devin Wallace took the loss in the circle, moving to 7-4 on the season. She pitched six innings and Brittany Nimmo pitched the final inning as they gave up a combined 10 hits.
