
Softball Travels To Winthrop, Gardner-Webb For Midweek Games

RALEIGH – The NC State softball team is set for its third road trip of the season when it visits Winthrop Tuesday and Gardner-Webb Wednesday for a pair of midweek games. Both contests are set for a 4 p.m. start and will be streamed on the Big South Network.
The Wolfpack heads into the week with a 12-7 record while the Eagles are 8-6 and Runnin' Bulldogs are 13-9. Gardner-Webb will host UNCW in a doubleheader Tuesday before welcoming the Pack to Brinkley Stadium Wednesday.
Last Time Out
The Wolfpack dropped its series with Pittsburgh last weekend at Dail Stadium. After winning its ACC opener 7-0 on Friday, the squad suffered a 9-1 loss on Saturday and dropped a 7-5 decision on Sunday in the rubber match.
All-Time Series
Tuesday will mark the seventh time NC State and Winthrop have met, as the Pack leads the all-time series 5-1. The teams last met on Feb. 19, 2011 at the Georgia Softball Classic and the Pack earned an 8-0 win.
NC State and Gardner-Webb have only met twice prior to Wednesday and the Pack has won both contests. They last met on Feb. 10, 2007 at the Carolina Classic and NC State picked up a 5-0 victory.
Pack Youth
Through 19 games the team's 11 underclassmen have made a combined 140 of 190 possible starts (73.6 percent), and are responsible for 88 of the team's 141 hits this season as well as 62 of the team's 91 runs scored.
Scoring First
NC State is 10-1 when scoring first in a game, and is outscoring its opponents 91-59. The team has tallied at least six hits in nine of its last 10 games.
Shurbutt's Stellar Start
Freshman Timberlyn Shurbutt has quickly made a name for herself in NC State's lineup. She currently leads the team with five home runs, ranking among the top 50 in the NCAA in the category. She belted one in each of the team's three games with Pittsburgh last weekend.
Last weekend Winthrop opened up its home slate when it hosted the Winthrop/adidas Tournament at Terry Field and posted a 4-1 record. The squad collected wins over Youngstown State (4-0), Norfolk State (4-3), Albany (1-0) and Sacred Heart (4-1).
Blake Wallert, Ashley Westbrooks and Morgan Lowers are all batting over .300 as they have each tallied 13 hits and scored at least four runs. As a team Winthrop is batting .216, averaging 5.14 hits per game and 2.5 runs per game.
Its pitching staff holds a combined 2.58 ERA, as Kiley Majette paces the squad with a 1.37 ERA and 5-2 record. The team is averaging 5.71 strikeouts per game and giving up 2.92 runs per game.
Scouting Gardner-Webb
Gardner-Webb also hosted a tournament last weekend, the Red And Black Softball Tournament, finishing 3-2 as it earned a pair of wins over Marist (5-1, 3-1) and one over NC Central (5-3). The Runnin' Bulldogs are 10-6 at home this season.
Katie Prebble and Andria Booth lead the team with .404 and .403 batting averages, respectively. Prebble head belted a team-best 11 home runs while Booth paces the team with 29 hits. As a team Gardner-Webb is batting .291, averaging 7.31 hits per game and 5.36 runs per game.
In the circle the Runnin' Bulldogs own a 4.20 ERA, averaging 2.59 strikeouts per game and 5.18 runs per game. Laken Myers paces the staff with a 3.03 ERA and a 3-4 record.
