PORTLAND, Ore. – The NC State women's soccer team capped off its weekend in Oregon with a 1-0 win over Portland on Sunday evening at Merlo Field.
The Wolfpack improves to 2-0-0 while the Pilots move to 1-1-0.
COACH SANTORO'S TAKE
Thoughts on going 2-0 on the west coast
"It was a great road trip. We played two great teams from really good conferences this weekend. Today was a complete performance for 90 minutes and were in control of the game, especially in the second half tonight," said head coach Tim Santoro.
On adjustments from Oregon match on Friday
"We had to deal with a lot of travel and a lot of heat the other day. The turf at Oregon was very hot, but we watched a lot of video and tweaked a few things. Some of it was just being on west coast time and being rested, and was probably the biggest difference. They're a very focused group and did a lot things the past few days to make sure they were ready for tonight."
On preparing for home opener Thursday
"We'll have to adjust again to time zones and will have a quick turnaround to prepare for Coastal Carolina. They're one of the top teams in the Sun Belt Conference so it's going to be another tough game. We'll do the same process of watching video, training a few times and getting ready to go.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tziarra King's goal on an outstanding individual effort in the 51st minute was the difference for the Pack. It marked the sophomore's first of the season as she scored from 15 yards after a fast break across the middle of the field, with her shot finishing inside the left post.
The Pack's offense made an impressive showing with 17 shots, controlling possession for the majority of the contest. The defense remained intact the entire match as Sydney Wootten was only forced to make one save in the net.
Rachel Cox had a close opportunity in the 48th minute with a shot that hit the right post, while Kia Rankin threatened on three separate occasions from inside 20 yards.
UP NEXT
The Pack will return to Raleigh and prepare for its home opener Aug. 24 when it welcomes Coastal Carolina to Dail Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
