RALEIGH – The No. 25/21 NC State women's soccer team opened its home slate on Thursday evening at Dail Soccer Stadium with a 3-0 win over Coastal Carolina.
The Wolfpack improves to 3-0-0 on the season while the Chanticleers fall to 2-1-0.
COACH SANTORO'S TAKE
On 3-0 start to season
"Everything is pretty solid right now," said head coach Tim Santoro. "We're not giving up many chances or goals. The spacing is spread around and we've been pretty consistent with the first weekend. It's nice to see that consistency in our defending and attacking as well as across the line."
On offense clicking in match
"Creating the chances was good, finishing the chances is probably an area that we'll focus on. I think we'll see a lot of teams put numbers behind the ball, and we're able to create chances but the next step is finishing chances because when you get into conference play the fewer chances there will be, so we have to be a little more efficient in front of the goal."
On controlling possession for majority of match
"That's how we play. If we have the ball it's hard for the other team to score. Our passing and spacing is very good. I think if we can keep that rhythm and keep that as a strength of ours we'll be in good shape."
HOW IT HAPPENED
NC State controlled possession for the majority of the match with a season-high 18 shots, as 12 of them were on goal. Ricci Walkling scored her first goal of the season in the 29th minute, a strike inside the box off of a double assist by Hannah Keogh and Tziarra King that finished inside the right post.
In the 49th minute Kia Rankin managed to score on a fast break through the upper third of the field, finishing inside the left post. King scored a late goal in the 84th minute on a Naomi Powell assist, finding the right part of the net.
UP NEXT
The Pack will return to action Sept. 1 when it hosts Princeton at Dail Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. and will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
