Freshman Will Wilson turns in a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State baseball team picked up its sixth straight victory with a 7-1 win in the series opener against Delaware Friday night at Doak Field at Dail Park. The Wolfpack collected 12 hits in the contest and has now recorded double-digit hits in five of its last six games.
Â
The Pack moves to 26-20 on the year, while the Blue Hens fall to 24-19. Redshirt senior Johnny Piedmonte earned the win with another strong effort on the mound to remain unbeaten at 5-0, while Delaware starter Nick Spadafino took the loss to fall to 4-3.
Â
Freshman Will Wilson started the scoring for the Wolfpack with a solo home run in the bottom of the third, his fourth of the season, to give NC State a 1-0 lead. Delaware countered in the top of the fourth with a run to even the score, but Piedmonte escaped the jam with a groundout to Wilson at second base.
Â
NC State answered in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs to grab a 3-1 lead. Evan Mendoza ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Brad Debo and Wilson singled through the right side to plate Brett Kinneman.
Â
The Wolfpack capitalized on a Blue Hen error in the sixth, as Andy Cosgrove dropped a bunt single but the throw to first was wild, which allowed Mendoza to race around and score from second. Stephen Pitarra stepped to the plate two batters later and singled to left field, scoring Wilson to make it 5-1. Josh McLain drove in the final run of the frame on a fielder's choice to shortstop, as Cosgrove scored.
Â
Redshirt sophomore pitcher Austin Staley relieved Piedmonte in the sixth and threw just four pitches in the seventh inning before striking out the side in the top of the eighth on 13 pitches.
Â
NC State plated its final run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth, as Shane Shepard smacked a pinch-hit single down the first base line to plate Wilson from third to push the Wolfpack advantage to 7-1.
Â
Wilson turned in the second four-hit game of his collegiate career, as he was a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and single to finish a triple shy of the cycle. The Kings Mountain, N.C., native scored three runs and drove in a pair.
Â
Mendoza was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Pitarra and Joe Dunand also pitched in with a pair of hits.
Â
NC State was 5-for-12 on the night with runners in scoring position, while Delaware was held without a hit in that regard at 0-for-6.
Â
The Wolfpack and Blue Hens will return to the field for game two of the series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening, as NC State hosts its Inaugural ALS Awareness Game.
