Rain Can’t Slow Down Wolfpack Bats in 14-7 Victory
4/25/2026 8:01:00 PM | Baseball
After being shut out in the opener, the Pack (27-15, 10-10) had 15 hits, including three home runs. Ty Head hit his team-leading 12th long ball of the season, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Dalton Bargo, who had hit five home runs in his first eight games, connected for his sixth home run of the season and his first since March 7th.
Luke Nixon hit his career-best sixth home run of the season, while Rett Johnson extended his hitting streak to a team-high 16 games after finishing with two hits and three runs scored. Johnson moved his average to .435 on the season.
Ryder Garino (3-2) had a career outing on the mound in relief, retiring all nine Hokie batters he faced, including a career-best seven strikeouts. Garino came on in relief for Cooper Consiglio in a 7-7 game.
Consiglio battled through four innings, coming back out after the first weather delay. He finished, allowing seven runs on seven hits with six walks and five strikeouts. Anderson Nance finished the game, allowing just one hit in the final two frames and recording three strikeouts.
The two teams traded blows in the first four innings. After the Hokies took a lead in the first, NC State took the lead right back following Bargo's two-run home run. The hosts scored four in the bottom of the second, and the Wolfpack responded with three in the top of the third, with three straight hits and a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 5-5.
Trailing 6-5, NC State again took the lead on a two-run home run in the top of the fourth off the bat of Head.
The Wolfpack had the leadoff runner on in seven of the nine innings and capitalized with the runner on third and less than two outs, going 5-6 (.833).
Virginia Tech scored its seventh and final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Mikey Ryan hit what would turn into the game-winning run following a sacrifice fly. The Wolfpack entered the weekend seventh in the country and second in the ACC in sacrifice flies.
The Pack had runners on first and second with nobody out at the top of the eighth before the second delay of the game. NC State's bats weren't affected, as they broke the game open with a five-run inning, started with a bases-loaded hit by pitch to Head.
McHugh became the third Wolfpack hitter to have three RBIs following a sacrifice fly, a wild pitch, and a Lanphere single, making it 13-7.
In the ninth, Nixon launched the ball 430 feet to make it 14-7. The rubber match will be tomorrow, Sunday, April 26th, at 1 p.m.
