NC State Baseball Drops Series Finale Against #1 Louisville

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State baseball team split the first two games of the series with top-ranked Louisville, but dropped the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park, 8-1, as the Cardinals clinched the series.

The Wolfpack falls to 13-12 and 4-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while the Cards move to 21-2 and 8-1 in conference play. Louisville starter Nick Bennett picks up his third win and remains unbeaten, while Cory Wilder takes the loss for NC State.

Game Recap
For the first time in the three-game series, Louisville plated the first run of the game. Drew Ellis hit a solo home run in the second inning to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead on his team-leading fifth blast.

Louisville added three runs in the third to stretch the advantage to 4-0. Devin Mann homered to left field and Brendan McKay and Ellis each tallied RBI singles in the frame. The Cards tried to tack on another run, but left fielder Jack Conley fired a strike to Andy Cosgrove at the plate to throw out the runner trying to score.

It was the seventh outfield assist of the season for NC State.

The Cardinals plated two runs in the fourth and two runs in the eighth to extend the lead. NC State had a couple of good scoring opportunities in the fourth and seventh inning, but could not get the big hit.

NC State avoided the shutout in the ninth after Stephen Pitarra doubled down the right field line to score Jack Conley, who was hit-by-pitch to start the frame.

- NC State handed No. 1 Louisville its first ACC loss on Friday night and it was also just the Cardinals second loss of the season.
