Junior Josh McLain extends his hitting streak to eight games
RALEIGH, N.C. – The sixth-ranked NC State baseball team was edged Wednesday evening by the Charlotte 49ers, 6-5, at Doak Field at Dail Park. The Wolfpack held the early lead, but the 49ers scored a couple runs late to earn the victory.
Â
It was the first time this season that NC State has lost a game when scoring first. The Pack moves to 5-3 on the year, while Charlotte improves to 7-2.
Â
NC State plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Brock Deatherage was hit-by-pitch, moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third base. Will Wilson lifted a sacrifice fly into center field to plate Deatherage to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 advantage.
Â
Brett Kinneman followed with a single through the right side and Evan Mendoza stepped to the plate next and launched a double to deep left center, scoring Kinneman to push the NC State lead to 2-0.
Â
Charlotte benefitted from an NC State error to trim the deficit to 2-1 in the second inning with an unearned run. The Wolfpack got the run back in the bottom of the frame, as Wilson drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded to give the Pack a 3-1 margin.
Â
A triple by Brett Netzer started the third for the 49ers and he scored on a groundout by Jackson Mims to cut the NC State advantage to 3-2.
Â
In the sixth inning, Charlotte's Zach Jarrett hit a two-run homer over the left field wall to put his team ahead, 4-3. The Wolfpack answered in the bottom of the frame with a couple runs to take a 5-4 lead.
Â
Joe Dunand led off with an infield single to third base and Shane Shepard walked to put runners at first and second before a wild pitch moved both runners up a base. Brad Debo followed with a double to right center to score both and put NC State back in the lead, 5-4.
Â
Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, Charlotte countered in the top of the seventh with two runs to regain the lead, 6-5. The 49ers collected three hits in the frame, highlighted by a two RBI double from Zack Smith.
Â
NC State tried to get a rally going late, but Charlotte reliever J.D. Prochaska and Matt Brooks were up to the task and did not allow the Wolfpack to get anything going.
