Senior pitcher Sean Adler records career-best 10 strikeouts
RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior Sean Adler recorded a career-best 10 strikeouts on the mound and junior Brock Deatherage turned in a 4-for-4 performance at the plate to lead the sixth-ranked NC State baseball team to a 9-3 victory against Austin Peay in the home opener Friday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Â
The Wolfpack moves to 3-1 on the season, while the Governors fall to 3-2. It was the first meeting between the programs.
Â
Adler was terrific on the mound for NC State, pitching 5.1 innings to earn his second win of the season. He struck out the side in the second inning and again in the fifth en route to a career-best 10 strikeouts. It was also a career-long outing for the Northridge, Calif., native, as he notched one more out than he has in previous outings.
Â
NC State did not waste any time to get going offensively, as Deatherage doubled to left center to start the bottom of the first. Freshman Will Wilson followed with a single to center field, putting Wolfpack runners at the corners with nobody out. Brett Kinneman grounded out to the first baseman, allowing Deatherage to score from third giving the Pack a 1-0 lead.
Â
In the second inning, Deatherage stretched the NC State lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer down the right field line, his first of the season. Josh McLain singled prior to his at-bat and scored on the round-tripper.
Â
Austin Peay ended Adler's shutout bid with a solo home run in the top of the fourth by Alex Robles, but the Wolfpack answered in the bottom of the frame. Deatherage drove in the Wolfpack's fourth run of the day with his second double of the game, plating McLain from first base to make the score 4-1.
Â
Kinneman's three-run blast in the sixth allowed NC State to pull away, as his second homer of the year extended the Wolfpack lead to 7-1. McLain and Deatherage each singled prior to Kinneman's at-bat to score.
Â
The Wolfpack tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the seventh, following an error by the shortstop to open the inning. Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to center field for an RBI and Evan Mendoza reached on an RBI fielder's choice, as the second baseman made a great play to take away a hit.
Â
Dre Gleason homered for the Governors in the ninth, but Pack pitcher Evan Brabrand got the next batter to ground out and ended the game with a swinging strikeout to preserve the win.
