No. 6 NC State Clinches Series, Defeats Duke 12-2

NC State baseball drilled Duke 12-2 on Saturday night at Doak Field at Dail Park to clinch the series
The Wolfpack (31-11, 12-6 ACC) took a 1-0 lead in the third on Evan Mendoza's solo shot the left, his third of the year. In the fifth, NC State poured on seven more to erase doubt from the outcome. One more crossed in the sixth to make it 9-0. The Pack tacked on three for insurance in the eighth before Duke (24-20, 9-14) scored two in the ninth to set the final 12-2.
Brian Brown (6-1) submitted a near flawless seven innings of work to capture the win, scattering three hits and walking one with eight punchouts. The sophomore lefty took a no-hitter into the fourth, retiring nine of his first 10. After a pair of hits and a hit batter, Brown retired 11 of his last 12, striking out the side in the sixth.
Chris Williams followed him, striking out one and giving up a hit in the eighth. Christian Demby allowed two earned on two hits in the ninth, fanning one.
Eight of nine Wolfpack starters contributed hits. Mendoza extended his team-leading hitting streak to 16 games in a 1-for-2 effort with a career-high three runs, one RBI, and a walk.
Brock Deatherage went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Stephen Pitarra doubled, drove in a pair, and scored once. Brett Kinneman doubled in a 2-for-4 effort with a run, a walk, and an RBI. Andrew Knizner walked, drove in a run, and scored once in a 1-for-3 outing. Josh McLain had an RBI and a run in his second game back from injury.
