No. 8 NC State baseball won 3-2 on Saturday
RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 8 NC State baseball won 3-2 to even its series with Boston College on Saturday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (13-3, 1-1 ACC) took an early lead on Andrew Knizner's solo shot to left in the bottom first. Boston College (11-3, 1-1) answered with a two-run homer in the third before Chance Shepard's two-RBI double to left set the final 3-2.
NC State starter Brian Brown (2-0) earned the win on 6 2/3 innings with nine punchouts, one shy of tying his career high set May 21, 2015 against Notre Dame. The sophomore finished with two earned on five hits and a walk, allowing just two baserunners after the third inning home run. Brown retired nine of his last 10 faced.
Will Gilbert relieved him and worked two innings of shutout ball, striking out a pair and walking none. Tommy DeJuneas collected his fourth save by striking out the final batter with a 96 mph fastball.
Knizner and Shepard both went 2-for-4. Brock Deatherage led off for the second game in a row, going 1-for-3 with a run. Josh McLain scored once in a 1-for-2 day with a walk.
Stephen Pitarra singled, stole a base, and made a crucial unassisted double play at second to end the eighth inning. Evan Mendoza had a defensive gem of his own, delivering a throw to first from his back for the second out of the ninth.
NC State returns to action on Sunday at 1 PM for the series finale. Radio duties will be handled by 88.1 WKNC, streaming on GoPack.com/watch. Fans can follow along with live stats on GoPack.com, or Twitter updates via @NCStateBaseball.
