CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -
NC State (15-17, 1-7 ACC) softball took on Boston College (8-19, 5-3 ACC) today in Chestnut Hill, Mass. in an ACC doubleheader. The Pack fell in the first contest to the Eagles, and the second, though cut short, was ruled complete as a loss after 4.2 innings.
Alyssa Ishibashi notched the Wolfpack's first hit of the game by legging out an infield hit in the top of the fifth inning. Despite two runners being on base in that frame, the Pack was unable to convert the opportunity, and the game remained scoreless.
Boston College took a 2-0 advantage in the fifth inning off of three hits and one Pack error. With two outs in the frame, the umpires called the game due to a previously arranged drop-dead time in order for the Wolfpack to catch its flight back to Raleigh.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Wolfpack came from behind to tie the game at three in the seventh inning, only to fall 5-3 in 14 frames to Boston College.
Alicia Abbott paced the Pack offensively, going 3-for-6 in the contest.
Kayla Cox pitched the entire 13.2 innings, surrendering only two earned runs on eight hits while issuing nine walks and striking out 16 Boston College hitters.
Bethaney Wells led off the second inning with a walk, and advanced to third when Chelsea Tate reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt. So, with one out in the frame, the Pack had two runners in scoring position, but was unable to capitalize, and after two, the score remained 0-0.
The Eagles took advantage of two NC State errors and three issued walks in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking a 3-0 lead.
Through the first three innings, every out recorded on defense by the Wolfpack was in the form of a strikeout issued by starting pitcher Cox.
The Pack loaded the bases in the fourth inning thanks to three basehits, but was again unable to capitalize on the opportunity, as Toni Ann Williford struck out looking to end the frame.
The NC State offense finally found its rhythm in the top of the seventh inning. Alyssa Allbritten was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, and then Bridget Desbois followed with a walk to put two runners on for Wells. Wells then belted her team-leading fifth homerun of the 2011 season to knot the score at 3-3.
Cox retired Eagles in the bottom of the seventh to push the game into extra innings.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Boston College had a runner in scoring position with one out when Brittany Wilkins roped a shot into left center field. Out of nowhere, Wolfpack centerfielder Landon Warren swooped in to make an game-saving diving catch in the gap, sparking a double play to end the inning with the score still knotted at three.
In the fourteenth inning, Boston College got a hit with one out, then Gemma Ypparila knocked a home run over the wall in right center to give the Eagles the victory, 5-3, over the Wolfpack.
NC State softball returns to action Wednesday, April 6 against UNC-Charlotte at Curtis and Jaqueline Dail Softball Stadium in Raleigh, N.C. The doubleheader against the 49ers is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
