RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State head coach Lisa Navas won her 600th career game today, jumping from 598 to the milestone with a doubleheader sweep of Charlotte (20-17, 6-2 Atlantic 10) at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
In the second game of the twinbill, Morgan Peeler earned the 7-2 win for the Wolfpack, giving up zero earned runs off of six hits in the complete game effort.
Offensively, Bethaney Wells posted a 2-for-4 performance for the NC State (17-17, 1-7 ACC), notching two singles and an RBI in the victory. Toni Ann Williford notched two RBI on the day after driving a two-out double in the second inning.
Williford drew a walk to lead off the game, but was thrown out at third by Charlotte's Whitney Williams on a base hit by Landon Warren. Warren came around to score on an infield single by Wells, giving the Pack a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
In the second inning, Alyssa Ishibashi notched a single and was later driven in on a double by Williford, which extended the NC State lead to 3-0.
The Pack put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth, giving the squad a 5-0 lead over the 49ers.
Charlotte put up its first run of the game in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a Wolfpack defensive error to bring the score to 5-1 in the game.
Freshman Chelsea Tate knocked her first career homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the Wolfpack lead to 6-1 in the contest. Later in that inning, fellow freshman Leah Jones narrowly missed notching her first blast of the season.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Pack blanked Charlotte 8-0 in five innings. Kayla Cox picked up the win for NC State, giving up three hits in five innings of work while striking out nine 49er hitters.
Wells was hit by a pitch to lead off the second inning, and moved into scoring position following two-straight fielder's choice plays. Tate then roped a double down the line to score Wells and Caitlin Dent. The next batter, Ishibashi, then notched a base hit to plate Alicia Abbott. By the end of the inning, the Pack had compiled a 4-0 advantage over Charlotte.
Dent extended the NC State lead to 6-0 in the third inning by blasting her first homerun of the 2011 season, a two-run shot.
Warren knocked her second round-tripper of the campaign in the fourth inning, giving the Pack a 7-0 lead.
NC State softball returns to action Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m. against North Carolina in an ACC doubleheader at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium in Raleigh, N.C. The contest will be the Pack's Kay Yow Pink Game, a celebration of the school's former women's basketball coach and her fight against breast cancer.
