RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball earned a doubleheader split with North Carolina today at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. The Wolfpack took the first game by a score of 3-1, but fell to the Tar Heels 10-2 in the second contest.
Alyssa Allbritten went 2-for-3 with two singles in the second game, and Alicia Abbott notched her second homerun of the 2011 season for the Pack.
The Tar Heels struck first in the second game of the twinbill, putting up a run in the top of the first thanks to Haleigh Dickey's RBI-single that plated leadoff batter Kelli Wheeler.
UNC posted two more runs in the third inning off of two hits and a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Abbott hammered her second homerun of the season, a two-run blast, to pull the Pack within one run.
Dickey put UNC up two runs, 4-2, in the fifth with a solo homerun over the left field wall.
The Tar Heels scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 10-2 over the Pack.
In the first game of the doubleheader, NC State topped North Carolina by a score of 3-1. freshman pitcher Kayla Cox earned the victory for the Pack, and Toni Ann Williford posted a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
Cox put together an excellent outing in the circle, giving up one run off of four hits while striking out six Tar Heel hitters in the complete game effort.
Williford led off the game with a base hit and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. With two outs, Bridget Desbois notched a perfectly placed single, which scored Williford to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Bethaney Wells, then smashed her team-leading sixth homerun, extending the Pack advantage to 3-0.
North Carolina threatened in the top of the sixth inning by putting two runners on base before Cox fanned Brittany Robinson to end the frame, preserving the 3-0 Wolfpack lead.
Brittany McKinney put the Tar Heels on the board in the top of the seventh by knocking her third homerun of the 2011 season.
The doubleheader served as NC State softball's Kay Yow Pink Game. To raise funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, the Wolfpack program held a silent auction, sold official Kay Yow Cancer Fund merchandise and took general donations. Overall, $2140 was raised for the cause.
NC State softball returns to action tomorrow for the final game of its series with North Carolina. The first pitch is slated for noon at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
