CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The NC State softball team was unable to overcome the No. 23/- Virginia five-run first inning and dropped the series finale, 7-4, Sunday afternoon at Palmer Park.

The loss moves the Pack to 25-23 overall and 6-14 in conference play.

How it Happened

Virginia seized control immediately, scoring five runs in the opening inning behind a leadoff homer from Jade Hylton, a two-run blast by Bella Cabral and a two-run double from Alex Call.
After being forced to the bullpen early, Charli Orsini settled things down, holding the Cavaliers scoreless over the next three innings to keep NC State within striking distance.
The Wolfpack answered in the third when Maia Townsend reached and Lily Livingston launched a two-run homer to center, cutting Virginia's lead to 5-2.
Carmen MontesDeOca helped create another scoring opportunity in the fourth with a two-out double, but Virginia escaped the inning without allowing a run.
The Cavaliers added an insurance run in the fifth, using a walk, stolen base and wild pitch to extend their lead to 6-2.
NC State rallied again in the sixth. Morgen Talley was hit by a pitch, Kendall Simmers singled and Taryn Massey delivered an RBI double before Makayla Marbury brought home another run with a groundout to make it 6-4.
Virginia answered right back in the bottom half, as Macee Eaton lined an RBI double to restore a three-run cushion.
The Wolfpack went down in order in the seventh as Virginia secured the series-clinching 7-4 victory.
