Softball Falls to Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. --
NC State (15-14, 1-4 ACC) softball jumped out to an early lead over Georgia Tech (27-5, 2-0 ACC), but fell victim to an eight-run Yellow Jacket fifth inning, dropping the second game of the doubleheader by a score of 8-4 at Mewborn Field in Atlanta, Ga.
The Pack got on the board early in the second game, posting two runs in the top of the first inning. Landon Warren and Alyssa Allbritten notched back-to-back base hits, and eventually came around to score to give NC State a 2-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets threatened in the first inning, but Peeler shut them down and then returned in the second frame to strike out the side for three of her eight strikeouts.
In the top of the fifth inning, the game was suspended due to heavy rain and scheduled to continue at noon on Sunday, March 27.
On Sunday, in the top of the fifth inning, the NC State offense picked up where it left off the day before, posting two runs to take a 4-0 lead. Warren led off the frame by reaching on a Georgia Tech error and moved to third on a single by Allbritten. Later, Linzy Rother notched a base hit to score Warren and Allbritten, but was thrown out at the plate after an Alicia Abbott double to end the inning.
Georgia Tech responded in the bottom half of the fifth, taking an 8-4 lead. Morgan Peeler started the inning, but surrendered three hits and four walks while also hitting a batter, and was unable to record an out. Kayla Cox came on in relief and retired three of the next four batters for the Pack.

In the first game of the doubleheader, NC State (15-13, 1-3 ACC) fell victim to a Georgia Tech seventh inning rally, losing by a score of 5-4.
Bethaney Wells and Chelsea Tate both posted 2-for-4 performances at the plate for the Pack.
Warren got the Pack offense going early by ripping a double in the first inning off of Georgia Tech (26-5, 1-0) starter Hope Rush. The next batter, Allbritten, tapped a grounder to move Warren to third base, and Bridget Desbois then roped a double to plate her and put the Wolfpack up 1-0.
The Pack loaded the bases in the second inning off of three base hits, but Warren struck out looking to end the frame and NC State was unable to push any runs across.
Cox, the Pack starter in the circle, struck out the first four Yellow Jacket batters she faced in the game, but surrendered three hits in the second inning. The base hits coupled with a hit batter and error allowed Georgia Tech to put two runs on the board in the second frame, making the score 2-1 in the Yellow Jackets' favor.
Tate opened up the fourth inning with her second base hit of the game, and was later driven in by an Alyssa Ishibashi single to knot the score at two. NC State reclaimed the lead at 3-2 when Warren's groundout sent Scout Albertson, pinch running for Alicia Abbott, home.
The Wolfpack struck again in the fifth inning, taking a 4-2 lead. Wells ripped a line drive single and later came around to score when Ishibashi was hit by a pitch for the team-leading seventh time this season.
Cox got Georgia Tech leadoff batter Christy Jones to line out to begin the bottom of the seventh inning, but surrendered two hits two the next three batters, including a two-RBI double by Kelsi Weseman to allow the Yellow Jackets to tie the score at 4-4. The next batter, Kristine Priebe, laid down a perfect suicide bunt to plate Weseman and give Georgia Tech the victory, 5-4.
