RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball (13-11,1-1 ACC) split a doubleheader with ACC foe Florida State (14-14,1-1 ACC) this afternoon at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium, dropping the first game 3-2, but taking the second contest 4-2.
Alyssa Allbritten paced the Pack at the plate in the second game, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a single.
Morgan Peeler, the Wolfpack starter in the circle, surrendered two runs on five hits and struck out three in the victory.
The NC State offense got going early in the second game, posting three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Alyssa Ishibashi and Toni Ann Williford led off with back-to-back singles, and were both plated by an Allbritten two-RBI double. Bridget Desbois followed with a single of her own to drive in Allbritten, giving the Pack a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
Florida State pushed across two runs in the third inning thanks to three base hits, trimming the NC State lead to 3-2.
In the bottom half of that inning, Desbois reached base on a FSU error and came around to score on a Chelsea Tate fielders choice, extending the Pack advantage to 4-2.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Pack fell 3-2 to Florida State at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
Kayla Cox earned the start for the Pack in the circle and gave up three runs on six hits while striking out 11 Seminoles in the complete game effort.
Florida State loaded the bases in the top of the second inning after back-to-back singles and a hit batter. Cox, however, fanned the next three hitters in order, and the score remained 0-0.
Tate notched the first hit of the game for NC State in the third inning, but the Pack offense was unable to push her across, and the game remained scoreless through three frames.
The Wolfpack threatened again in the fifth inning when Caitlin Dent laced a double with one out in the frame. The next two batters, though, were struck out by Florida State starter Sarah Hamilton to end the inning.
Florida State broke the tie in the sixth inning when Jen Lapicki knocked a three-run homerun over the left field wall to give the Seminoles a 3-0 lead.
Allbritten put the Pack on the board in the sixth inning, sending a base hit through the infield to plate Ishibashi, who drew a walk to lead off the frame.
Bethaney Wells led off the bottom of the seventh by ripping a double into the outfield gap, and was later plated by Alcia Abbott. The rally was not enough, though, and the Pack fell to the Seminoles by a final score of 3-2.
NC State softball returns to action tomorrow at noon in the final game of the series with Florida State at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
