RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball (7-10) opened its home schedule today, falling 4-3 to Stony Brook (2-9) in the Pack's first game of the Wolfpack Challenge at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
Alicia Abbott went 1-for-3 for the Wolfpack, smashing her first homerun of the 2011 season.
Kayla Cox, the Pack's starter in the circle, gave up four runs on four hits in seven innings of work, striking out 12 in her first home game for NC State.
Stony Brook struck first in the game, capitalizing on a single, two walks and a hit batter to go up 1-0 on the Wolfpack in the second inning.
The Pack responded in the bottom half of the second, though, when Abbott lined her first homerun of the 2011 season over the outfield fence to knot the score at 1-1.
NC State took a 3-1 lead in the third inning after Alyssa Ishibashi drew a walk to lead off the frame and moved into scoring position off of a base hit by Alyssa Allbritten. The next batter, Bridget Desbois, hit a sharp ground ball that was misplayed by Stony Brook, scoring Ishibashi and Allbritten.
The Sea Wolves pulled within one run, 3-2 in the fourth inning after Taylor Chain knocked a homerun down the left field line.
Stony Brook took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning off of back-to-back homeruns by Jessica Combs and Lauren Maloney.
The Pack returns to action at 4:30 p.m., taking on Fairfield in the fourth game of the Wolfpack Challenge.
