RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball (9-10) picked up a 3-2 win over Maine (7-18) today in the Wolfpack Challenge.
Alicia Abbott went 2-for-2 for the Wolfpack in the victory, and Landon Warren notched a two-RBI homerun.
Kayla Cox picked up the win for NC State, throwing three innings of hitless ball while striking out seven.
Maine got on the board first, taking advantage of a Pack defensive error and a base hit to go ahead of NC State by a score of 1-0 in the second inning.
Junior Jade Hennig came on in relief of starter Morgan Peeler in the third inning, and surrendered one run off of one hit in the frame. After three innings, the Black Bears owned a 2-0 advantage over the Wolfpack.
Abbott led off the bottom of the third inning with a sharp single, and was pinch ran for by Samantha Melton. The next batter, Warren, moved Melton into scoring position. Alyssa Ishibashi then laced a single, pushing Melton up one more base, and Toni Ann Williford finally plated the run, pulling the Pack within one at 2-1.
In the fifth inning, Landon Warren drove her second homerun of the season over the outfield wall to score Abbott and give the Pack a 3-2 lead over Maine.
NC State softball returns to action tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. to take on James Madison in the final game of the Wolfpack Challenge at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
