Wolfpack Unable to Solve Smith in Saturday Setback

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – NC State dropped the second game of its weekend series at No. 23 Virginia, falling 8-0 in five innings on Saturday afternoon at Palmer Park.
The Wolfpack threatened in the opening inning, loading the bases with one out, but Virginia starter Taylor Smith escaped the jam to keep NC State off the board. The Cavaliers answered in the bottom half of the frame when Bella Cabral launched a two-run home run to left field for an early 2-0 lead.
Virginia broke the game open in the third. After an RBI single pushed the lead to three, Alex Call delivered the decisive blow with a grand slam to left, extending the Cavaliers' advantage to 7-0.
NC State put a runner aboard in the fourth, but Smith continued to cruise in the circle, retiring the final five batters she faced. Virginia added one final run in the fifth on an RBI single from Hannah Weismer to clinch the run-rule victory.
Bats were ice cold for NC State as it did not record a hit throughout the afternoon. Three members of the Pack reached base throughout the outing, courtesy of walks - Carly Short (HBP), Lily Livingston and Kendall Simmers (2).
The Wolfpack will look to move back into the win column on Sunday at 12pm and the game will be streamed on ACCNX.
