RALEIGH, N.C. – In the 60th all-time meeting between Elon and No. 10 NC State, the visiting Phoenix left with a 2-0 victory over the Wolfpack at the Doak Tuesday afternoon. It was Elon's first shutout against NC State.
The Wolfpack (14-3) lost its first midweek game of the season, suffering a second shutout of the year. The last time NC State was shut out twice within the first 17 games was in 2016.
The game featured only eight hits combined, with Elon (9-7) scoring in the first and third innings. NC State's four hits were all singles, with one walk and five strikeouts.
Ryder Garino (1-1) made his first start for the Wolfpack. He pitched two innings, allowing one run on no hits, with two walks and three strikeouts in the loss. Danny Heintz replaced Garino, allowing the second run on two hits and two walks, with one strikeout.
A trio of freshmen—Aiden Kitchings, Sam Harris, and Luke Hemric—came on after Heintz and shut down the Phoenix, keeping the game close. They combined to pitch six innings, allowing just three baserunners and striking out five.
Elon starting pitcher Owen Winebarger (1-1) kept the Wolfpack in check for 6.1 innings, allowing all four NC State hits, with just one walk and four strikeouts. The Phoenix staff retired 20 of the last 23 Wolfpack batters.
A leadoff walk to start the game scored Elon's first run. A wild pitch, a steal of third, and a sacrifice fly later made it 1-0.
In the third, Heintz got two quick outs on four pitches. A two-out single and a steal put a runner in scoring position, and Elon scored its second run with a single up the middle.
In the seventh, NC State had its best chance to score as Sherman Johnson drew a walk and Mikey Ryan singled, putting runners on with one out. Brayden Frassman nearly tied the game with a foul line double attempt that landed just foul. He then grounded into a double play.
NC State will now turn its attention to ACC play as Boston College visits the Doak for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 13th at 3 p.m.
