RALEIGH, N.C. – Behind Ryan Marohn's seven scoreless innings, No. 10 NC State baseball opened conference play with a 4-2 victory over Boston College Friday afternoon at Doak Field.
Marohn (3-0) made his fourth start of the season after missing last week's game, but he didn't miss a beat. He went seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out six in the victory.
Boston College (10-7, 2-2) had an opportunity in the ninth to tie the game, as the Eagles had the bases loaded with one out. Collins Black (2) came on and earned the save as the Wolfpack (15-3, 1-0) turned a heads-up 9-3-5 double play to end the game.
Offensively, Brayden Fraasman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and his second career triple. Rett Johnson had an RBI single, using his speed to beat out an infield hit in a 2-for-3 day. Luke Nixon hit his second home run of the season, an opposite-field shot as well.
The Wolfpack tagged Eagles starter AJ Colarusso (1-1) for all four runs on seven hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. Boston College scored both its runs in the final two frames after back-to-back doubles in the eighth, and in the ninth, the second run crossed home plate before the double play was recorded.
It was a scoreless three innings to start the contest until the Wolfpack broke through in the fourth, after a Fraasman sacrifice fly down the right field line in foul territory scored a speedy Mikey Ryan from third.
The fourth inning was the first of three straight innings in which the Wolfpack put up runs. In the bottom of the fifth, designated hitter Dalton Bargo singled Johnson home, who reached base from his first infield single and moved to second following a Ty Head sacrifice bunt.
Two important runs in the bottom of the sixth made it 4-0 Wolfpack, as Nixon took the first pitch of the inning 351 feet to right field for a homer. Shortly after, Fraasman tripled and scored after another infield single from Johnson, giving him his 14th RBI of the season.
NC State is now 3-1 in two-run games and 9-0 when scoring first.
The series continues Saturday, March 14th, at 2 p.m. at Doak Field and will be available on ACCNX.
