Trumble’s Pin Seals Victory for the Pack Over Virginia

RALEIGH – Ninth-ranked NC State wrestling sneaked past Virginia 19-17 at home Friday night thanks to a pin by heavyweight Isaac Trumble in the final bout of the dual.
Opening up the 2026 conference slate, the Wolfpack was looking for its 12th straight win over the Cavaliers in Reynolds Coliseum Friday night, which resulted in a nail-biting 19-17 victory.
The Pack struggled out of the gate, missing No. 1 Vincent Robinson at 125 lbs, and recording losses through the first three bouts of the match. Relief was found in the fourth bout at 149 lbs when fifth-ranked Koy Buesgens was able to find team points, making the dual score 3-10.
Virginia's No. 29 Colton Washleski secured a major decision over Brogan Tucker at 157 to take a 14-3 advantage at the break. Coming out of the intermission, the back half of the lineup for NC State was able to find wins to give hope to Reynolds Coliseum.
16th-ranked Will Denny found much-needed bonus points at 165 lbs, followed by back-to-back decisions at 174 lbs and 184 lbs by fifth-ranked Matty Singleton and Don Cates. The three straight victories for the Wolfpack cut their deficit to 13-14.
In just his second appearance for the Pack, Citadel transfer No. 25 Patrick Brophy put up a hard fight at 197 lbs but ultimately fell 8-11 to make the team score 13-17.
With all eyes on second-ranked Isaac Trumble, knowing he needed to put up as many points as possible, the sixth-year veteran for the program came in clutch. In order to pull out the win for his team, a technical fall or fall would be required by the heavyweight. Claiming his fifth bonus point win of the year (out of seven matches), Trumble was able to pin his opponent in the second period to secure the Wolfpack's victory over the Cavaliers.

NC State travels to No. 24 Stanford for the first time on Friday, followed by a neutral-site dual on Sunday with CSU Bakersfield.
