PALO ALTO, Calif. – Eighth-ranked NC State wrestling edged past 24th-ranked Stanford 21-20 Friday night in the Pack's first-ever trip to The Farm.
In a fiery conference competition, NC State crept past Stanford just barely in the squad's second ACC dual of the season to move 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.
Coming out with a bang, sixth-year veteran No. 12 Ryan Jack at 141 lbs pinned #17 Jack Consiglio to immediately put the Pack up 6-0 off the bat.
Following up with a statement win, fifth-ranked Koy Buesgens at 149 lbs collected a major decision over ninth-ranked Aden Valencia. Continuing to show his growth in the off-season, the redshirt-sophomore improves to 15-1 in his second career campaign.
After dropping the match at 157 lbs, freshman standout No. 16 Will Denny at 165 lbs snagged a tight 6-5 win, followed up by a decision by fifth-ranked Matty Singleton at 174 lbs as well, to put the team score at 16-5.
NC State then faced back-to-back losses at 184 and 197 lbs to allow the Cardinal to creep back in, 16-14.
Reliable veteran Isaac Trumble, ranked second in the country at heavyweight, provided much-needed bonus points with a technical fall. He now sits with a 75% bonus point percentage on the season, snagging eight wins overall with six of those in the bonus.
The Wolfpack then dropped the last two matches in barn-burners with the 125 lbs match going into sudden victory and the dual being decided in the final match at 133 lbs. Zach Redding held seventh-ranked Tyler Knox to a decision to allow his team to take the victory 21-20.
