NC State battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 7 Florida State on Sunday, Sept. 21, at Dail Soccer Stadium. Jade Bordeleau converted a penalty kick in the 81st minute to put the Pack in front, nearly snapping FSU's streak of 63 consecutive matches with a goal, before the Seminoles equalized in the closing seconds.
From the start, the contest was physical with Florida State pressing forward, but NC State's back line held firm. The Seminoles fired eight first-half shots, while goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas collected two saves to preserve the scoreless frame. The Pack's best chance of the half came in the 28th minute when Erica Roberts drove down the left side and tested the keeper from just outside the box.
After the break, FSU continued to apply pressure with a 13-3 shot advantage, but it was NC State that struck first. In the 81st minute, Bordeleau calmly buried the Pack's first penalty kick of the season to give the Wolfpack the lead. The defense held until the final moments, but with just 35 seconds remaining, FSU's Wrianna Hudson collected a throw-in from Jordynn Dudley and tucked a shot inside the near post to secure the 1-1 draw.
A Win Would …
Saturday marks the 20th all-time meeting between NC State and Virginia Tech, with the Hokies holding a 12-5-2 advantage in the series. The Wolfpack's last victory over Virginia Tech came in 2017, a 1-0 double-overtime win in Blacksburg. Most recently, the teams split the points in 2024 with a scoreless draw at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Scouting the Hokies
Virginia Tech enters Saturday's match with a 4-5-2 record, including a 2-2-1 mark at home. The Hokies are still searching for their first ACC win of the season after falling to North Carolina, Louisville, and Wake Forest.
Offensively, VT has tallied 24 goals from eight different players. Anna Weir, Hannah Pachan, Eliana Salama, and Natalie Mitchell lead the charge with four goals each. Defensively, goalkeeper Lauren Hargrove anchors the back line with 39 saves and a 1.40 goals-against average.
Head coach Chugger Adair is in his 15th season guiding the Hokies, compiling a 173-94-32 record. During his tenure, he has led VT to 12 winning seasons, a College Cup appearance in 2013, two Elite Eight runs (2013, 2024), and five trips to the Sweet 16 (2011, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2024).
September Success
Since the start of September, the Wolfpack have turned a corner on the pitch, putting together consistent results. Entering the final match of the month, NC State holds a 2-1-2 record dating back to its scoreless draw at Elon on Sept. 4.
The Pack is coming off its strongest week of the season, highlighted by its first ACC win of the year at SMU (Sept. 18) and its first draw against a top 10 opponent since 2022 with a 1-1 result against No. 7 Florida State (Sept. 21).
NC State's attack has found new life in September, scoring seven goals, already more than double its August total of three. The defense has also taken a major step forward, conceding just three goals this month compared to 14 in August.
Bordeleau's Having a Ball
Bordeleau continues to lead the Pack's attack with a team-best five goals this season, already surpassing her team-leading total from 2024. Her scoring mark currently ranks 12th in the ACC.
The junior forward played a pivotal role in NC State's best week of the year, scoring the only goals in the Pack's first ACC win at SMU and its top 10 draw against No. 7 Florida State. She delivered the game-winner in the 50th minute in Dallas and converted an 81st-minute penalty kick at home against the Seminoles.
With 39 shots this season, the second most in the ACC, Bordeleau remains a focal point of NC State's offense and will be vital to the Pack's pursuit of more wins in a loaded conference slate.
Pratapas Wins ACC Defensive Player of the Week
Pratapas was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday, Sept. 23. The senior anchored the Pack during a 1-0-1 week that included NC State's first ACC win of the season and its first top 10 draw since 2022. With the honor, Pratapas became the Wolfpack's first ACC weekly award winner this year and the program's first ACC Defensive Player of the Week since Maria Echezarreta on Oct. 19, 2021.
The Clemmons, N.C., native opened the week with her third shutout of the year, making four saves in NC State's 1-0 win at SMU. She then backed that up with a three-save performance in a 1-1 draw against No. 7 Florida State, holding the Seminoles, who entered the match averaging 3.38 goals per game, scoreless for nearly 90 minutes before conceding the late equalizer. On the season, Pratapas has started and appeared in nine games for the Pack with 28 saves. Since the season opener against James Madison, she has lowered her goals against average from 3.00 to 1.33.
