BERKELEY, Ca. – NC State baseball completed its first ACC sweep of the season after defeating the California Golden Bears 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium. It was the first ACC road series sweep for the Wolfpack since 2021 when they went on the road to Pitt and swept the Panthers.
Wolfpack starter Ryan Marohn (5-2) was brilliant on his way to his fifth win of the season, going 7.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. It was the third time he has gone more than seven innings this year.
It was another big day offensively for Chris McHugh, who finished each game against the Golden Bears with three hits and added two more RBIs to add to his season total, which now stands at 44. Alex Sosa added his seventh home run of the season to give the Pack some insurance in the eighth. All but one NC Stater reached base.
Jacob Dudan locked down his fifth save of the season, getting the last seven outs of the game.
Ty Head's 42 walk of the season started the game off for NC State. He eventually came around to score on a Justin DeCriscio sacrifice fly to give NC State a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Bears tied the game in the bottom half of the first with a sacrifice fly of their own after two straight hits and a passed ball put runners on second and third. Marohn was able to get out of the inning without giving up any more damage.
After the first-inning run, Marohn put up zeros across the next five innings and retired nine straight at one point.
NC State continued to apply pressure on Cal starter Oliver de la Torre (2-3) as the Wolfpack loaded the bases in the second. As he has done all series and all season, the Wolfpack's leader in hits and RBIs added to his total as Mchugh singled through the right side to drive in his fifth and sixth RBI of the series.
De la Torre gets the loss after pitching six innings, allowing just the three early runs on five hits but walked four and only had one strikeout.
Cal added a single run in the bottom of the eighth after two straight doubles, but that would be all the scoring for the home team.
UP NEXT: The Wolfpack will return home to Raleigh to begin a five-game homestand against ECU on Tuesday, April 22, at 6 p.m., which will be broadcast on ACCNX.
