RALEIGH, NC – Behind Ryan Marohn's second consecutive complete-game shutout and a two-run home run from Chris McHugh, NC State Baseball defeated Wright State 3-0 Sunday afternoon from the Doak. The Wolfpack (11-5) has won eight straight games with the win.
Marhon (3-1) was virtually unhittable all afternoon as the lefty from Chantilly, Va. put up nine scoreless innings, holding the Raiders to just four hits while walking just one and striking out a career high 14 batters. Marohn struck out nine straight batters between the sixth and ninth innings and 10 of the last 12 batters he faced.
After throwing a complete-game seven-inning shutout last time out, Marohn has now thrown 17 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the fifth inning against Coastal Carolina in the Jacksonville Classic on February 23rd. It is the first Wolfpack nine-inning complete game since Matt Williadsen did it against UNC in 2022.
Marohn threw 126 pitches on the day, the most in his career, with a strike percentage of 69%.
In a 0-0 ball game, Chris McHugh's third home run of the season broke the deadlock and gave NC State a 2-0 lead. McHugh leads the team with a .386 average, 22 hits, and 23 RBIs after Sunday. It was his team leading sixth multi-RBI game.
Josh Hogue, Jet Gilliam, and Matt Heavner also added hits. Hogue now has a seven-game hitting streak, the longest on the team.
Wright State's (4-9) starting pitcher, Jarrett Heilman (0-3), got the loss but kept Wright State close as he pitched seven innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
The third Wolfpack run was manufactured without a hit being recorded. Ty Head struck out, but a passed ball allowed him to reach first safely. Heavner, as he has done all year, got a bunt down and a throwing error allowed Head and Heavner to advance a base with nobody out. Justin DeCriscio came on as a pinch hitter and got the job done with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Two of the Raiders' four hits came in the third inning, but a pickoff from Marohn took a runner off the basepaths. A Wright State double followed the pickoff, but he was stranded at second as Marohn struck out the next batter. It was the only extra-base hit of the afternoon for the visitors.
UP NEXT: The Wolfpack will welcome NC A&T for a midweek game at the Doak on Tuesday, March 11th, at 6 p.m. before beginning ACC play against Virginia Tech over the weekend in Raleigh. All games can be found on ACCNX.
