On a night the offense had 10 hits, Wolfpack batters were patient at the plate, generating 11 walks. Brayden Fraasman had a big night at the dish with a four RBI night, a home run, and a double in three at-bats. Chris McHugh continues to be one of the ACC's best hitters, adding two more runs batted on two hits to his team-leading totals.
Making his second straight Tuesday start was Cooper Consiglio (1-0), who pitched three innings, allowing just two base runners and striking out three on his way to his first win of the season.
Nine pitchers saw game action for North Carolina A&T (3-11). Evan Hart (0-1) got the loss, who gave up five runs on three hits, only recording an out in his appearance.
After a scoreless first from both sides, NC State broke the game open with a six-run second and a four-run third inning. Fraasman's third home run of the season got the scoring going and was immediately followed by a home run from freshman Ty Head for back-to-back long balls, putting NC State up 2-0. With the bases loaded and an error from the Aggies, the lineup was kept moving, bringing up McHugh, who doubled down the left field line to bring in two more. An Alex Sosa sacrifice fly brought in the sixth run of the frame.
Loading the bases once again in the third from three walks, Mat Heavner's seventh and eighth RBIs of the season came after he singled through the left side to increase the score. A dropped fly ball from the Aggie first baseman kept Luke Nixon alive at the plate, and he immediately flowed with a single scoring Heavner and Ryan Jaros.
Josh Hogue was one of four Wolfpack players to have at least a two RBI night as a sacrifice fly to left field brought in the 10th run of the game. NC State this year is 14 for 35 (.400) with the bases loaded and hitting .308 with runners in scoring position.
Four more runs came in the fifth, again capitalizing on with the bases loaded as Drew Lanphere worked a six pitch walk to drive in a run, followed by Fraasman clearing the bases with a double, making it 14-0.
One of the Aggies' four hits was a two-run home run from JT Taylor to break up 16 consecutive scoreless innings from Wolfpack pitching.
Jaxon Lucas followed Consiglio, who tossed two scoreless innings, retiring six straight batters. Matt Willadsen came on for the second time this year, getting through an inning of work just allowing the home run. For the first time this season, Derrick Smith closed the game. After allowing a hit to the first batter he faced, Smith struck out the side to end the game and send NC State fans home happy.
UP NEXT: The schedule now turns over to conference play as the Wolfpack will open a three-game series against Virginia Tech from the Doak beginning Friday, March 14th at 6 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ACCNX.
