RALEIGH, NC – Dominic Fritton pitched seven innings of one-run ball, and NC State scored 10 runs across the fifth and sixth innings to open ACC play with an 11-1 run-rule victory over Virginia Tech Friday night from Doak Field.
NC State (13-5, 1-0) had a season high 15 hits as they recorded their 8th run-rule victory of the year and moved to 11-0 when scoring 10+ runs. First baseman Chris McHugh led the way with three hits and three RBIs, scoring twice. Justin DeCriscio had a three-hit game, and Alex Sosa drove in two on two hits and came home to score twice.
Fritton (3-1) picked up his third win of the season after going seven innings and allowing just one run on two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. The first inning was the only inning to give Fritton trouble, with the Hokies pushing across a run after two walks and a hit. After the first, Virginia Tech only had one base runner for the rest of the game. During the run in which the Wolfpack scored 11 unanswered runs Fritton retired the last 14 batters he faced.
Brett Renfrow (1-2) started for Virginia Tech (12-6, 1-3) and cruised through the first four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth, finishing with a final line of 4.2 innings pitched, allowing four runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Drew Lanphere started the fifth inning for the Wolfpack with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt from Matt Heavner moved Lanphere over to second to put a runner in scoring position. Freshman Ty Head followed with his second home run of the season to put the Wolfpack up 2-1.
A DeCriscio double put a runner on for McHugh, who hit his fourth home run of the season and added to his team lead 28 RBIs and is now hitting .422 with 27 hits on the year. With Renfrow out of the game, Sosa doubled and came around to score off a Hokie error to make it 5-1.
The sixth inning for the Wolfpack went like the fifth, seeing NC State put up five runs on five hits. It was Lanphere again getting on base with a hit and Heavner getting a sacrifice bunt down to move him over. DeCriscio singled in the sixth run of the game and came home to score off a Sosa single. The fifth single of the inning came from Brayden Fraassmen, who made it 10-0 heading into the seventh.
Fritton toed the mound in the seventh and got three quick outs, with his last out via the strikeout. Fritton threw 117 pitches and lowered his season ERA to 1.26.
