
Wolfpack Takes Series from Hokies; Splits Doubleheader

GAME 1
In a 3-3 game in the bottom of the eighth, the Wolfpack scored three runs on one hit, which proved to be the difference and pushed NC State into the win column. Josh Hogue and Chris McHugh walked, and Alex Sosa used a sacrifice bunt to move them into scoring position. Jet Gilliam, who had come on as a defensive replacement, brought in the go-ahead run via a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3.
In a 2-2 count, Luke Nixon hit his first home run of the season for some added insurance, making it 6-3. Andrew Shaffner toed the mound in the top of the ninth and sealed the win with two strikeouts and a ground out.
Shaffner (3-0) earned his third win of the season in relief after coming on in the fifth and working 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and matching his career best with five strikeouts. Shaffner followed starter Heath Andrews, who went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Virginia Tech scored a single run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. The Hokies were 1-5 with runners in scoring position, while Andrew Sentlinger went home with the loss after giving up the fourth Wolfpack run in the eighth.
Nixon totaled three of the Wolfpack's six hits in the game, with the three other hits coming from the bottom of the order. Matt Heavner had a three RBI game with a two-run home run in the second and a sacrifice bunt in the seventh.
Game 2
Game two went the way of the Hokies. Another close game turned quickly, as the Visitors turned a 6-6 game in the sixth into a 20-6 game after scoring 14 runs in the frame.
The Hokies scored 14 runs in the sixth off of eight hits, seven walks, and one error. NC State used five different pitchers in the inning.
Ryan Marohn started the game and had his shortest outing of the season after going just 2.1 innings and allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Cooper Consiglio (1-1) got the loss after giving up three runs in two innings. Anderson Nance, Jacob Dudan, Camden Wimbish, Matt Willadsen, and Carson Kelly came on in relief. Wolfpack pitching gave up 16 hits and 12 walks.
Sosa had a three RBI night going 3-4 with three hits and a run scored. Josh Hogue added two runs and two runs batted in. Chris McHugh added his team leading 29th RBI of the season with a single in the second to extend his on base streak to 13 games.
Nine runs were scored between the two teams in the first two innings, with the Pack overcoming a three-run deficit in the second. A Justin DeCriscio triple allowed Ty Head to score and give the Wolfpack their sixth run in the third, making it 6-4, but the Hokies responded with two of their own to tie the game.
Up Next: NC State hits the road and begins a four-game road trip starting in Kannapolis on Tuesday, March 18th, as they take on Davidson before traveling to Pittsburgh for a three-game series.
