JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – NC State was held to just three hits and five runners in scoring position as the Wolfpack fell to Alabama 4-0 in game two of the Jacksonville College Baseball Classic Saturday afternoon.
Despite picking up the loss, Wolfpack starting pitcher Heath Andrews (1-1) had a career-high six strikeouts in five innings of work. He allowed just two runs on four hits and four walks.
NC State (3-3) saw three singles from Chris McHugh, Drew Lanphere, and Ty Head on the night.
For Alabama (7-0), Riley Quick (2-0) picked up the victory, while Tide pitchers combined for eight strikeouts, four walks, three hits and no runs.
Freshman Anderson Nance made his second appearance of the season, pitching in 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. Sophomore Camden Wimbish followed with 1.1 innings, striking out two batters.
Alabama struck first in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on three hits, including a double, to put the Tide up 1-0. With runners on second and third with only one out, Andrews was able to limit the damage to only one run after a groundout and a flyout.
A solo home run in the bottom of the fourth doubled Alabama's lead on the Wolfpack as Brennen Norton hit his second home run of the season.
The Wolfpack found themselves in trouble during the bottom of the fifth as Alabama loaded the bases with only one out. Andrews got a ground ball, and Justin DeCriscio and Luke Nixon turned a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the jam and keep the score 2-0.
Alabama added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to go up 4-0. In the top of the ninth, the Wolfpack worked two walks to try and start a rally, but nothing would come of it, and NC State would drop its third straight game.
It is the first time the Wolfpack has been shut out since April 14, 2024, against Clemson.
UP NEXT: The Jacksonville College Baseball Classic concludes on Sunday, February 23, when the Wolfpack takes on Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m.
