JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – NC State baseball closed out the Jacksonville Classic with a 10-3 loss to Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon from 121 Financial Ballpark.
NC State's (3-4) offensive production came from the top four spots in the lineup as the Wolfpack totaled four hits for the day. Brayden Fraasman recorded his first triple of the season and added an RBI. Luke Nixon and Alex Sosa contributed the other two runs batted in, while Justin DeCriscio singled.
For Coastal Carolina (6-2), starting pitcher Riley Eikhoff threw for 5.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs on four hits. He recorded six strikeouts and issued only one walk. Following Eikhoff, Hayden Johnson secured his first save of the season after pitching three and a third innings, permitting no hits and no runs with four strikeouts and two walks.
For the first time over the weekend, NC State jumped out to an early lead as Nixon laced a double to the left field gap, driving in DeCriscio, who had reached on an error to begin the game.
Coastal Carolina did not wait long to respond. In the bottom of the first inning, with two outs, a walk kept the inning alive for Dom Tozzi, who homered to put the Chanticleers up 2-1.
In the bottom of the third, Coastal Carolina added another to make it 3-1, but Wolfpack starting pitcher Ryan Marohn limited the damage to a single run.
A two-run sixth inning from the Wolfpack allowed NC State to close the gap on the Chanticleers' lead. The inning began with a single from DeCriscio, and after stealing second base, Brayden Fraasman hit a triple to bring the score to 4-2. On the second pitch of his at-bat, Alex Sosa singled through the left side, making it a one-run game. An error from Coastal Carolina left runners on second and third, but the Pack couldn't bring any more runs home.
After throwing 89 total pitches, Marohn's day was done. Marohn (1-1) went five innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits, two walks, and six strikeouts.
Jacob Dudan came on in relief and walked the first two batters he faced, allowing Coastal Carolina to extend their lead back to two. A sacrifice fly put the home team back up three, but no further damage would occur.
A four-run seventh broke open the game for the Chanticleers, pushing the lead to 10-3, with the Wolfpack unable to respond with any more runs.
Freshman relief pitcher Tristan Potts made his first collegiate appearance, getting two outs, including his first career strikeout in the bottom of the eighth.
The loss extends the Wolfpack's losing streak to four games.
UP Next: The Wolfpack will return to Raleigh on Tuesday and begin a four game homestand starting with Richmond on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. from the Doak. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
