RALEIGH, N.C. – Freshman outside hitter Rebecca Ring marked a new career high of 22 kills in the Pack's 3-1 win over California Sunday afternoon in Reynolds Coliseum.
Ring is the first freshman since Ava Brizard in 2022 to record 20+ kills in a match. She also joins senior Courtney Bryant as the only other member of the Pack to tally a 20+ kill match this season.
NC State opened the match with a 5-1 scoring run, but the Golden Bears bounced back to tie the opening frame, six-all. The two teams battled but it was Cal that hit 15 points first, sending the set into the media timeout.
Cal continued to lead despite several attempts by the Wolfpack to minimize the deficit and went on to take the opening frame, 25-20.
The Wolfpack regrouped between sets and built a lead that the Golden Bears struggled to conquer. A kill by freshman opposite Jordan Smith sent the frame into the media timeout with the Pack leading, 15-12. Cal put up a fight and eventually came within one of the Pack, (22-21), forcing head coach Megan Wargo-Kearney to use a timeout with hopes of slowing the Golden Bears.
After four set points, the Wolfpack evened the match and took the second set, 28-26.
NC State continued to dominate in the third set and closed it out on an 11-4 scoring run to take the overall lead, 2-1, and the set, 25-19.
Three kills by from Ring helped give NC State a 6-2 lead to begin the fourth set and forced Cal to use an early timeout. The Wolfpack couldn't be stopped, despite several long rallies. A 3-0 scoring run closed out the fourth set with NC State on top, 25-19.
Bryant finished with 11 kills and 17 digs to mark her 10th double-double of the season. Redshirt-junior setter Elaisa Villar tallied a career high 41 assists and added 21 digs to her stat line.
The win moves NC State to 11-11 on the season and 4-8 in conference action. The win marked the 11th win under Wargo-Kearney, the 828th in program history and 218th conference win in program history. It was also the first win over the Golden Bears, evening out the series, 1-1.
The Wolfpack will host eighth-ranked Louisville on Friday, November 7 at 7pm on ACCNX in Reynolds Coliseum.
