RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team dropped its ACC opener 3-1 to California on Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, NC State (3-5-1) struck first when Mana Nakata crushed the opening goal into the top-left corner in the 55th minute. Nakata pounced on a loose ball in the 18-yard box and powered her shot past Cal goalkeeper Kelly McManus for a 1-0 Wolfpack lead.
Cal's Karlie Lema, the nation's leading goal scorer, was involved in all three of the Golden Bears' goals to flip a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead. Lema delivered an assist to Velize King for the tying goal in the 63rd minute before securing a brace with two goals in a 2-minute span in the 74th and 75th minutes.
The Wolfpack and Golden Bears (8-1-1) played an even first half with Cal holding a slight 6-5 advantage in shots. Jade Bordeleau, one game after her first-career hat trick, logged NC State's first shot on target in the 16th minute to force a save from McManus.
In the 22nd minute, Annika Wohner sprinted down the middle of the field and fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. McManus dove to her left to deny Wohner's effort and earned the Wolfpack a corner kick.
