RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 17 NC State baseball (31-19, 17-11) secured a series win over No. 8 Wake Forest on Friday night in a thrilling 2-1 win over the Demon Deacons.
The Pack walked off the Deacs as Noah Soles drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the ninth inning, bringing home Brandon Butterworth who led off the final frame with a free trip to first base of his own.
Butterworth and Soles, alongside Alex Sosa and Chase Nixon each drew a walk in the ninth inning, with Wake Forest's Zach Johnston starting the closing frame by issues free bases to Butterworth, Sosa and C. Nixon, resulting in his second loss of the season on the mound.
NC State's offense outhit the Demon Deacons 5-3, with C. Nixon the lone Pack batter to register multiple hits, with his two-out single in the fifth inning driving in brother Luke Nixon after an error advanced the younger of the two an extra base.
Jacob Dudan picked up the win for the Wolfpack on the mound, with the freshman hurler striking out two and holding Wake Forest hitless over 2.2 innings of work.
Dominic Fritton started the game on the hill for the Wolfpack, tossing 4.2 frames while striking out five. Fritton was followed by Andrew Shaffner, who like Dudan held Wake hitless through 1.2 innings.
With the win, the Pack now have five series victories over ranked opponents, four of which currently reside in the top-12 of D1Baseball's most recent top-25 poll.
NC State's regular-season finale is set for a 3 p.m. start time on Saturday, May 18, with the Wolfpack hosting the Demon Deacons for the final leg of the three-game series at Doak Field. Saturday's contest can be streamed on the ACC Network Extra through the WatchESPN app, with fans encouraged to arrive early to celebrate the program's seniors on Senior Day.
