CARY, NC—For the third time this season, a pair of the ACC's very best and two top-15 teams battled it out in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. Back-to-back ACC Championships were not in the cards for NC State as the Wolfpack fell for the first time this season to instate rival UNC 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Center.
It was a rematch of last year's tournament championship match, seeing the Wolfpack battle all afternoon. Dropping the doubles point, the Wolfpack could not capture four singles wins needed for victory like they had done in the previous two meetings this season.
On court one, a top-10 singles match unfolded as No. 10 Amelia Rajecki dominated her first set 6-1 over No. 7 Fiona Crawley, securing the Wolfpack's first-set win of the day. The team also saw first-set wins on court four, with Gina Dittmann taking on No. 59 Reilly Tran, securing a 6-4 first-set victory, and on court six with Sophie Abrams.
Abrams was down 5-2 in her first set but rattled off four straight games to take the lead and hold on to defeat No. 75 Tatum Evans 7-6 (7-4), creating momentum into her match's second set.
All three matches in which the Wolfpack took the first set would go unfinished.
In her first ACC semifinal appearance, Maddy Zampardo fell to No. 27 Anika Yarlagadda on court five, but not before she made things interesting in the second set after being down 5-1, saving off two match points. No. 52 Anna Zyryanova fell to No. 50 Carson Tanguilig in a match of ranked opponents.
The Wolfpack will now await hearing where they are seeded and will play in the NCAA Championship. The selection show is set to take place April 29 at 6:30 p.m.
