THE MATCHUP: SERIES AGAINST QUEENS
NC State and Queens University of Charlotte will meet for the first time on Wednesday afternoon. Queens is NC State's only first-time opponent on the Wolfpack 2024 regular season schedule.
SCOUTING QUEENS
Queens (2-5) earned its first series victory of the season this past weekend by taking two games out of three against Niagara. Outfielder Lewis Dillon leads the Royals with a .333 batting average, nine hits and six RBI. In games one and two of this past weekend's series, Queens limited Niagara to just four combined runs to clinch the series. Head coach Jake Hendrick enters his first season in charge of the Queens program after spending seven seasons at Division II program Northeastern State.
A-MAK ATTACK
Transfer and starting third baseman Alec Makarewicz had an outstanding weekend in Hawaii this past weekend, batting .462 with a team-high eight RBI, two homers and 12 total bases. Makarewicz homered from both sides of the plate in Friday's win over the Rainbow Warriors, marking the fourth multi-home run game of his career.
HANG 10
A trip to Hawaii not only served as a memorable trip for the Pack9, but it also gave the Wolfpack offense a spark heading into a 10-game homestand. NC State's offense pushed 32 runs across home plate in the series victory at Hawaii, hitting double digits twice with 17 runs on Friday and 10 runs on Sunday. NC State smacked 45 hits, including 12 for extra bases, in the offensive outburst at Les Murakami Stadium.
MIDWEEK MADNESS
To add to its difficult ACC slate, NC State faces five nonconference opponents predicted inside the top three of their respective leagues' preseason polls. Coastal Carolina (Sun Belt) and East Carolina (American) are both the preseason favorites to win their conference crowns. UNCW and Campbell are predicted second and third, respectively, in the CAA, while Ball State was predicted second in the MAC.
RECORD AGAINST IN-STATE OPPONENTS
NC State finished 9-8 against in-state opponents in 2023, completing season sweeps of UNCG and UNCW before splitting a pair of NCAA Tournament matchups against No. 12 Campbell in June. The Pack's only nonconference losses came to in-state opponents Elon (March 14) and No. 12 East Carolina (April 4). NC State also recorded a 22-7 win over Davidson on April 18, a 5-4 victory over No. 12 ECU on April 25, a 6-5 win over NC A&T on May and an 8-7 win over Duke at the ACC Tournament on May 23. Wednesday's matchup against Queens will be the Pack's first against an in-state team this season.
Since taking over the NC State baseball program in 1997, head coach Elliott Avent has led the Pack to a 354-179 (.664) record against in-state opponents.
HOME SUCCESS AT THE DOAK
Welcome to our house. Doak Field at Dail Park has served as a dominant home field advantage for the Wolfpack since 1966. In 2023, the Pack finished with a 26-7 record at The Doak. Since head coach Elliott Avent returned to Raleigh to take over the #Pack9 program in 1997, NC State has posted a 602-226 (.727) record in games played at Doak Field at Dail Park.
