
Gymnastics Opens ACC Slate With Dual Meet at UNC

RALEIGH, N.C. – For the first time since 1984, NC State gymnastics will participate in an ACC-sponsored meet on Friday night as the Wolfpack will open its conference slate with a dual meet at North Carolina.
Its third-straight road meet to start the season, Friday will also mark the first of six-consecutive ACC dual meets for the Pack.
NC State enters Friday's matchup of in-state foes coming off a 195.675 at the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad. The Wolfpack competed against some of the nation's top teams, including meet champion Cal who current resides in second place in RoadToNationals' Top 25 poll. The Golden Bears posted a 197.875 to claim the top score in the event's third of three sessions, while No. 16 Michigan State fired a 196.725 and BYU added a 196.100.
NC State's performance last week was highlighted by a pair of 9.900 scores from graduate Chloe Negrete, who tabbed a pair of season-high scores on vault and floor while adding a 9.825 on beam.
The Pack had a strong showing overall on vault, registering a 49.175 in its second rotation that matched its highest total in the event throughout the entire 2023 campaign.
North Carolina additionally competed in the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad, facing Arizona, Boise State, and Nebraska on Friday, Jan. 12.
The Tar Heels ended the quad meet in fourth place with a total score of 195.150.
While Friday night will mark the first meeting between the Wolfpack and Tar Heels as ACC foes in 40 years, the two met as EAGL opponents three times last season.
NC State opened its 2023 campaign against the Tar Heels by posting its best first-meet score in program history at 195.525. The Pack later faced North Carolina in a tri-meet alongside Western Michigan in Reynolds Coliseum, where NC State led the way with a 196.275.
The two foes faced off for the final time as members of EAGL at the EAGL Championships in Durham, N.H., where the Pack finished in second place amongst eight participants and topped the Tar Heels 196.425-196.350.
Friday's contest will be streamed on ACC Network Extra through the WatchESPN app, with the first rotation slated for a 7:30 p.m. start time.
