Trice Drafted No. 356 Overall on Tuesday
SEATTLE – NC State baseball outfielder Carter Trice was drafted in the 12th round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday afternoon. Trice, who was drafted No. 356 overall in this year's draft, becomes NC State's 187th MLB Draft selection in program history.
Trice, who transferred to NC State from Old Dominion prior to the 2023 season, made 41 appearances and 28 starts for the Wolfpack this past season. The Mechanicsville, Virginia native made 23 starts in left field, two in right field and five at designated hitter in 2023.
Trice batted .248 with nine doubles, six homers and 19 RBI in his first season with the Wolfpack. He ranked second on the roster with seven stolen bases, swiping seven bags on just eight attempts.
The Old Dominion transfer put together some impact performances against ranked opponents this past season, going 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base at No. 12 East Carolina on April 4. Trice also slugged a grand slam and went 2-for-2 after entering the game as a pinch hitter in a 12-2 victory at No. 16 Boston College on March 26.
Trice's selection marks the 124th player selected in the MLB Draft under NC State head coach Elliott Avent. He's the 10th position player drafted from NC State since 2020 and the 28th in the past 10 years.
Trice joins Wolfpack teammate LuJames Groover III as NC State's two selections so far in the 2023 MLB Draft. Groover III heard his name called in the second round of the draft on Sunday, going No. 48 overall to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Groover III is the ninth NC State player drafted in the top three rounds in the past 10 seasons, including the fifth since 2020.
