NC State Records First-Ever Three-Game Weekend Sweep of the Seminoles
RALEIGH – Dominic Pilolli lifted a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to help NC State complete a three-game sweep of Florida State at Doak Field. The Wolfpack's 5-4 victory over the Seminoles capped off a perfect 4-0 week in Raleigh and marked its first-ever sweep of Florida State in program history.
Florida State (13-22, 4-14 ACC) recaptured the lead in the top of the 10th when Cam Smith recorded a solo home run to left field, putting the Seminoles ahead 4-3 heading to the bottom of the 10th inning. Carter Trice opened the rally in the bottom of the 10th with a single before LuJames Groover III smoked a double off the wall, placing runners at second and third with just one out.
Jacob Cozart and Trevor Candelaria worked a pair of walks to tie the score with Candelaria's walk on a 3-1 pitch bringing home Trice from third base. Pilolli then entered as a pinch hitter and drove the second pitch of his at-bat to the base of the wall in center field, allowing Groover III to walk home from third base for the winning run.
NC State (24-11, 8-9 ACC) opened the scoring when Chase Nixon laced a two-run single to score Will Marcy and Groover III in the top of the first.
After a pair of zeros on the scoreboard for both teams for the next three innings, Florida State trimmed its deficit to 2-1 with an RBI groundout in the fifth inning. The Seminoles then took their first lead of the game with two more RBI groundouts in the sixth, breaking the tie to jump ahead 3-2 when Titan Kamaka drove in Smith for the go-ahead run.
For the second straight day, the Pack smacked a key solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Eli Serrano III tied the score at 3-3 when his solo shot landed into the NC State bullpen in right center.
NC State had two chances to win the game before extra innings, leaving the bases loaded in the eighth before stranding two runners in the bottom of the ninth. The Pack capitalized in the bottom of the 10th, drawing two walks before Pilolli's game-winning hit with runners on second and third with one out.
Baker Nelson (5-2) earned his fifth pitching victory of the season in Sunday's series finale. Brandon Walker (0-1) was handed the loss after the two batters he let reach in the bottom of the 10th crossed home plate.
On his birthday, Groover III tied with Nixon and Serrano III for a team-high two hits. NC State drew 11 walks off Florida State pitching.
Sunday's comeback victory helped NC State complete its first sweep over an ACC opponent in 2023 and marked the Pack's first sweep since taking all three games over NJIT on March 3-5. Similar to the comeback win over NJIT on March 5, NC State scored two runs in its final team at-bat to flip a one-run deficit into a one-run walk-off victory.
