RALEIGH – The Pack softball team defeated Boston College, 8-4, in game two to secure the series win Saturday afternoon at Dail Stadium.
The Eagles took an early lead after one scored with bases loaded and one out on a wild pitch. Redshirt-junior pitcher Aisha Weixlmann recorded a huge strikeout to slow Boston College and help end the scoring opportunity.
The Pack struggled to build momentum on the offensive side of things and went scoreless through the second inning.
To start the bottom of the third, Haley Haislip and Ellie Goins were walked by Eagles pitcher Abby Dunning. Rebecca Murray stepped up to the plate with no outs and reached on a fielder's choice while Goins was out at second. Katlyn Pavlick stepped into the box and Murray stole second after she was thrown her first pitch. On a 1-1 count, Pavlick drilled a ball over the left field wall to record a three run homer and her fifth of the season. The hit gave NC State a 3-1 lead over the Eagles, their first of the afternoon. Freshman Amanda Hasler stepped into the box and was hit by the second pitch thrown her way. Fellow freshman Gabi Wilson took over for Hasler at first base as a pinch runner and the next two Pack members to step into the box were walked. With bases loaded, Nadia Sykes bunted, attempting to allow Wilson to score, but the Eagles got Wilson out at the plate and Sykes reached on a fielder's choice. Kaylee Lambrecht was then walked, allowing Marbury to score and increase the Wolfpack's lead to three.
The Pack scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase the lead to seven. With two outs, Marbury scored on a wild pitch. Kaylee Lambrecht entered the box with one on base and two outs. She doubled to left center, allowing Sykes to score. The Eagles brought in a pitching change in hopes of ending the Pack's scoring run. Haislip stepped up to the plate with two outs, one on base, and a new pitcher. She swung on the third pitch thrown her way and drilled it over the fence to pick up her third career home run. The Wolfpack ended the inning with an 8-1 lead over Boston College.
The Eagles were unable to find a weak spot in the Pack's defense until the top of the sixth. After two batters got on with an outfield single, Weixlmann struck out Erika Andal to pick up the first out of the top of the sixth. With two runners in scoring position, Sykes grabbed a line drive at third to end the inning and end the Eagles chance of minimizing the scoring deficit.
Boston College scored three in the top of the seventh after Nicole Giery hit a three RBI homer. The Eagles efforts were cut short after the Pack picked up three outs to end the game.
Weixlmann finished the afternoon with six strikeouts, tying her season high, and pitched the entire seven innings.
Hasler led the team defensively with six putouts and Marbury led on the offensive side of things with two hits.
