RALEIGH – The Wolfpack softball team dropped the last two games of the series with Notre Dame Saturday afternoon.
The Pack advance to 7-17 on the season and 1-5 in ACC play.
NC State 2, Notre Dame 10 (6 inn.)
The Wolfpack looked to maintain the momentum from the night before. Redshirt-junior Aisha Weixlmann started in the circle and picked up the first out of the game after the Irish popped up to the circle. With bases loaded and one out, Weixlmann picked up her first strikeout of the day and second out of the inning. Despite bases being loaded, she struck out the next batter to end the inning. She threw 39 pitches in the top of the first to start the afternoon.
Graduate Rebecca Murray started the Pack's offensive efforts off with a single up the middle. She took second after freshman Nadia Sykes lined out to shortstop and was thrown out at first. Fellow freshman Amanda Hasler stepped into the box with two outs and one on base, but was unable to bring Murray home after being thrown out at first. The Fighting Irish continued to hold a 2-0 lead to end the first inning.
The Irish started the second inning with a walk and then Carlli Kloss reached on an error. After Leea Hanks singled up the middle and brought in one RBI, the Pack brought in a pitching change. Freshman Rylee Wyman entered the circle with one on and on the second pitch thrown, the Fighting Irish homered to take a 5-0 lead. Notre Dame finished the top half of the second with a 6-0 lead over the Pack, who was eager to get on the board.
Freshman MaKayla Marbury led off the bottom half of the second with a single up the middle and sophomore Hannah Goodwin attempted to get on base, but was thrown out at first after grounding it to the Irish third baseman. With one out and one on base, designated player Taylor Ensley stepped into the box and singled to the shortstop to get runners on the corners. Junior Haley Haislip attempted to bring one home, but the Irish recorded a double play to get both Ensley and Haislip out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third with two outs, graduate Katlyn Pavlick hit a first pitch bomb over the center field hall to get the Pack on the board and minimize the Irish lead.
NC State held the Irish scoreless through the top of the fifth and the bottom half allowed the Pack to minimize their lead. With one out, Haislip worked a 2-2 count and swung at the ninth pitch thrown her way. She drilled a ball over the right center field wall to minimize Notre Dame's lead to four and the homer was the second of her career.
The Irish matched the Pack's two homers on the day as Karina Gaskins hit her second of the game to lead by five once again. Wyman responded to the hit by striking out the next batter faced to bring up the first out of the game. The Irish managed to score two more runs to increase the lead to eight. NC State brought in its second pitching change of the game as freshman Wynne Gore entered the circle with two outs and one on base.
The Pack was unable to get it going in the bottom half of the sixth, ending the game in a run-rule win by the Irish.
NC State 1, Notre Dame 7
The series finale was a battle of defensive efforts as both teams had one win. The Irish had four batters step into the box, but the Pack stopped them from getting into scoring position. Notre Dame finished the top half of the first with one hit and one left on base.
The Pack had two outs when Sykes stepped into the box. She was walked by Payton Tidd and Hasler stepped up to the plate. Her first hit was a home run that went foul, forcing her back into the box. She struck out swinging, retiring the inning.
Both teams went scoreless until the top of the fourth when Joley Mitchell recorded a three run homer. The Pack quickly retired the top half of the inning after getting the next two batters out.
With one out and a 1-2 count, Hasler drilled a ball over the left field wall, just barely staying fair to get the Pack on the board. The homer was the third by the freshman in less than 24 hours, as she hit two in game one on Friday. The Irish got the next two out to end the Pack's attempts to minimize the lead more.
In the top of the fifth with one out, Notre Dame recorded back-to-back home runs to increase the lead to four. The Wolfpack infield had a quick meeting to regroup and got the next two Irish batters out.
The Fighting Irish added two more runs in the top of the seventh after back-to-back solo shots over the fence. After retiring the top half of the inning, the Pack took the box in attempts to minimize the Irish lead. Hasler was the first to step into the box and had 13 pitches thrown her way before being struck out by Tidd. The next two batters got out, ending the series finale.
Inscoe finished the day with seven innings in the circle and one strikeout. She tallied seven consecutive no hit innings (including four from Friday evening) on the weekend. Haislip led the defensive efforts with seven putouts, while Murray added four.
