MIAMI – The NC State baseball team suffered its second straight defeat Saturday night at Alex Rodriguez Park, falling 8-1 to Miami.
Hurricanes' starting pitcher Gage Ziehl was the story in Saturday night's matchup, allowing just one run over a career-high eight innings. NC State (13-2) recorded just four hits off the Canes' starter, pushing across its sole run of the game in the sixth inning.
Miami struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. CJ Kayfus opened the home half of the first with a double before back-to-back groundouts helped the Hurricanes take a 1-0 lead.
The Hurricanes added on in the second in the fourth innings to extend their lead to 4-0. A bases-loaded walk made it 2-0 Canes in the bottom of the second before a single and a two-base error helped push two more runs across in the fourth.
Starting pitcher Matt Willadsen battled through 5.1 innings, finishing his evening with six strikeouts and five hits allowed while allowing just two earned runs.
The Wolfpack pushed its only run across behind a throwing error on Miami catcher Carlos Perez, scoring Kalae Harrison all the way from second base when an errant throw down to first base sailed over the first baseman's head.
Miami extended its lead to 8-1 with a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring via a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly in the sixth before Ian Farrow delivered a two-out, two-run homer to right center in the bottom of the seventh.
Noah Soles paced the Pack with two hits, recording a single on the first pitch of the game before doubling to left center in the top of the third. Cannon Peebles, LuJames Groover III and Payton Green recorded singles for the Wolfpack in Saturday's setback.
NC State looks to close out the weekend with a victory Sunday when the Pack faces the Hurricanes in the series finale. First pitch Sunday is set for 1 p.m. and will now be broadcasted on ACC Network. Sunday's game has been flexed from ACC Network Extra to the linear ACC Network.
