Avent Becomes 29th Division I Coach to Reach 1,200 Career Victories
Avent, the 27th-year skipper at NC State, also captured NC State victory No. 976 in Sunday's 14-4 victory over the Hurricanes. Avent recorded 224 victories in eight seasons at New Mexico State, who recently inducted Avent into its Hall of Fame in February.
NC State (14-2, 1-2 ACC) scored in seven innings in Sunday's ACC triumph, recording multiple runs five times. The Wolfpack set a new season-high with six doubles and slugged three home runs, finishing the afternoon with nine extra-base hits.
The Pack struck first in the top of the first behind a two-run homer from Trevor Candelaria. LuJames Groover III kept the Wolfpack at-bat alive with a two-out single to left field, bringing Candelaria to the plate with a runner on first with two down. Candelaria then crushed the first pitch of his at-bat to center field to give NC State an early 2-0 lead.
NC State doubled its lead in the top of the second when Parker Nolan doubled down the left-field line, scoring Carter Trice and Jacob Cozart to give the Pack a 4-0 lead. Nolan then sprinted home from third base on a passed ball, extending NC State's early advantage to 5-0.
Freshman starting pitcher Dominic Fritton shined in his ACC debut, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings with a career-high seven strikeouts. Fritton registered his fifth strikeout of the game to end the bottom of the third, punching out Yohandy Morales with a strikeout looking to strand two baserunners. He finished his outing allowing just three hits with two walks allowed.
Cozart blasted a solo home run to open the top of the fourth, sending a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right field to make it 6-0 Wolfpack. Kalae Harrison then roped a double to right center, bringing home Nolan all the way from first base to extend the NC State lead to 7-0.
The Wolfpack extended its lead to 9-0 in the fifth behind back-to-back RBI doubles from Cozart and Nolan. Cozart's double to right field brought home Eli Serrano III from second base before Nolan's double off the centerfield wall scored Cozart easily from second base.
Groover III pushed the Pack into double digits with an RBI single to right field, scoring Harrison from second after his leadoff double to make it 10-0 in the sixth inning.
Nolan's strong day at the plate continued in the top of the seventh when he crushed a one-out solo home run to left center to make it 11-1. Miami scored its first run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth behind a pair of errors.
NC State scored its final three runs of the game in the top of the ninth, putting its first runner in scoring position behind Nolan's third double of the game. Harrison recorded his second RBI with an RBI groundout to second base before RBI singles from Candelaria and Payton Green stretched the Pack's advantage to 14-1.
Miami (10-6, 2-1 ACC) pushed across three runs in the bottom of the ninth to finish the game at 14-4.
Six NC State hitters recorded multi-hit performances in Sunday's win – Nolan (four), Harrison (three), Groover III (two), Candelaria (two), Serrano III (two) and Cozart (two). Nolan set a new career high with three doubles and tied a career high with four runs scored.
Sam Highfill moved to 3-0 on the mound this season, pitching 3.2 innings out of the bullpen while allowing just three hits and no earned runs. Highfill struck out five opposing batters and did not allow a walk in his dominant outing.
