NC State Drops First Game of 2023 Season
After the Pack (13-1) fell behind 8-0 early following an eight-run second inning for the Hurricanes, NC State strung together four straight innings with at least one run scored from the fourth through the seventh to tie the game at 8-8.
Miami (9-5), however, jumped ahead for good behind Ian Farrow's second homer of the night, sending a solo shot beyond the wall in right-center to retake a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the seventh.
The Hurricanes broke the game open early with eight runs in the top of the second, using four hits and two key Wolfpack errors to take an 8-0 lead. A pair of three-run homers from Farrow and Edgardo Villegas helped the Hurricanes build its early advantage.
Left-hander John Miralia entered with two outs and runners at first and third in the bottom of the third, striking out CJ Kayfus to end the inning.
The Wolfpack pushed its first two runs across in the top of the fourth when Noah Soles recorded his second hit of the day, doubling to right center to lead off the inning. Payton Green then advanced all the way to third on a throwing error from the third baseman, scoring Soles to make it 8-1. LuJames Groover III then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to trim the Pack's deficit to 8-2.
Carson Kelly entered with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, using a strikeout to post a scoreless frame for the Pack and strand two runners in scoring position.
NC State loaded the bases in the fifth with a walk and two hit-by-pitches, bringing home its third run when Soles lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. The Wolfpack, however, only scored one in the fifth inning to keep the game at 8-3.
Kelly struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth to continue his strong relief outing, getting a strikeout looking to end the fifth frame and mark his fourth straight strikeout.
NC State made it three straight innings with runs scored when Jacob Cozart dropped in a two-out, two-run single to shallow right field, trimming Miami's lead to 8-5. Cozart recorded the two-RBI base hit in a left-on-left situation, getting the better of left-handed reliever Chris Scinta.
Kelly finished his impressive performance out of the bullpen after getting the opening out of the sixth inning, registering a career-high five strikeouts. Baker Nelson then entered in a bases-loaded situation with just one out, striking out back-to-back Hurricanes to get out of the sixth unscathed.
The Wolfpack eliminated its eight-run deficit in the seventh inning when freshman Cannon Peebles crushed a two-out, three-run homer to right field. Green doubled down the left-field line with one out before Trevor Candelaria wore a 2-1 pitch to put two runners on for Peebles. Peebles then unloaded on the second pitch of his at-bat, sending a towering homer over the wall in right field.
Farrow's solo shot to lead off the bottom of the seventh proved to be the difference in Friday's game. The Pack then had a bit of unfortunate luck in the top of the eighth with two outs as Michael Gupton entered as a pinch runner for Cozart, who singled earlier in the inning to put the tying run on first base. Soles again hit a line drive early in the count, but his ball to the right side of the infield hit Gupton as he was running to second base to end the inning.
After Justin Lawson worked a scoreless frame in the bottom of the eighth, Alejandro Torres entered in the top of the ninth for the Hurricanes and retired the Wolfpack in order to seal the series opener for Miami.
NC State pitchers combined to strike out a season-high 15 Canes' batters on Friday night, marking the first time since April 15 against Boston College that the Pack pitching staff struck out 15 opposing hitters in a game.
The Wolfpack looks to even this weekend's series Saturday night at Alex Rodriguez Park. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on ACC Network Extra.
